Irish Rail website says it's planned for 2012 but no dates. Anyone know?

It wasn't available last time I took the train in Jan. goBus and CityLink offer WiFi though.

Not yet, herself goes over on the train and has to hotspot on her phone.
If wifi is a must then the bus is the only option.

If you are getting a bus back from Galway to Dublin I recommend Gobus.

They have wi-fi and use the motorway all the way on all their services.

Bus Éireann and City Link also offer the same but have less direct services.

Great. Thanks. Will definitely check them out.

True for Bus Eireann, but not for CityLink. CityLink also have a direct non stop service that takes the same time as GoBus and has wifi and toilets too.

CityLink then also have a stopping service that takes longer, but no point taking that if you are going Dublin to Galway.

Is going to happen but according to RUI not on all routes until end of the year. I guess it takes a while to retrofit routers onto all the trains.

Good news - writing this from the train to Galway! I guess it's kicked in.

    Thanks again all.

Sound so wifi is finally available on the train, excellent news.
Did you have to give a mail address etc like you do on the bus?
    What's the speed like?

You do on the Cork train at least. But you can just make up a fake email address like I do.

Yep, it seems to be one of those once-off registrations. I'm getting an upload test error message with that but it's pretty fast (very scientific I know)

VIA Rail Canada are using their wifi datalinks for more than customer benefit, but are using it for vehicle location too (to higher precision that the signalling system provides) for both internal and RTPI use.

Spoke too soon - signal dropped outside Ballinasloe, never to return. On a completely unrelated note, any recommendations for somewhere with good music (anything that's not too heavy) where a single female won't stick out like a sore thumb? Here for work this eve but might just stick around for a few days...

Plenty of spots along Shop Street (main pedestrian street), just walk along it and stick your head into a few places. You'll find somewhere.

Interesting. Looks like free wifi on transport is gathering pace. I got the London-Holyhead train last night, and it had free wifi. So did the Holyhead ferry terminal, and so did the Stena ferry to Dublin (though a bit slow), and of course so does the Dublin-Cork train I'm on now. And it seems there will soon be some wifi on the Tube as well: http://londonist.com/2012/06/london-underground-names-first-stations-for-free-wifi.php
