Replacing bottom bracket

How often should you replace the bottom bracket on a road bike, and how can you tell if it needs replacing? I've recently replaced wheels, chain and cassette, all to good effect, and am wondering should I replace the BB as part of routine maintenance. The bike is 2nd hand, probably around 8-10 years old, and I'd doubt the bb has ever been replaced. I do about 10-12 hours per week on it with plenty of climbing.

If I do replace it, is this a job for the bike shop, or is it easy enough to do yourself? Drive train is campag xenon triple, so I'm guessing this would be a suitable replacement, and this is the tool I need for removal / re-installation. I'd love to do the job myself, as one more step in the getting to know your bike series. Long term I had been planning on buying a new bike, but am now toying with the idea of a new frame instead, so knowing how to fit a bb would be useful.

BB's can last a lifetime. Only replace it if it is worn out or is giving you trouble.
