Anyone know where I can get cheap air con regas in south Dublin?

Have a 7yr old B6 passat, it works but its not exactly what I'd call cold air thats coming out, more like just air! Only noticed in the hot weather there.

    Thanks

halfords do a DIY product it costs circa €70. there are youtube videos that show you how to use it. apparently 1 can could last for 2 cars.

    is the clutch engaging?

you could have leaks. better take to a specialist.

Yeah but 100 cans wouldn't fix 1 car if the system leaks. Get a pro to have a look.

Pilsen Skoda in Ballymount do a proper professional air con system drain down, leak test and regas for €65. Best price anywhere in the country that I am aware of.

By the way the air con compressors on those Passats give a bit of trouble so that is a more likely cause of your issue than a lack of gas.

FastFit are doing it for €50 now, €40 if you have an Axa card!

Is there any test I could do to establish this myself?.........Or is it a case where I would be better off bringing it down to get regased and if that doesn't work it means the compressor is gone?

You can't really diagnose it yourself. If you bring it to Pilsen they will be able to diagnose it pretty quickly for you.

That's a great price. Makes the DIY aerosol can option even more pointless.

I wouldnt go mad trying to refill it just yet, if you have access to vagcom or know somebody who has one it can read the faults in the system. My passat had a similar problem and I got vagcom last week, Turned out to be a pressure switch,€50 later and about 20 mins work and the aircon is ice cold again which is great as Im off to south France in her in the morning :)

    Thanks.

So moral of the story get a diagnostic first. I think the best bet might be to bring it to Pilsen Skoda. They should know the VAG stuff pretty well and the seem reasonably priced also.

Just a quick side track on this-
Does the Climate Control on A4 B6 work on the same style system as standard A/c as mine needs to be done and was under the impression that CC is different to A/C

Just back from getting this done in FastFit in Galway, and have to say i'm very impressed.

They use a Bosch unit and it took 1hr 40mins over-all

They actually offer the re-gas for €39 regardless, but if you're with AXA they throw in the 'air bomb' for free (the freshener). For what it's worth, they never asked for any proof I was with AXA.

I'm not a fan of these big tyre centres, but have to say the service was brilliant and i'd have no problems recommending this particular establishment. I even gave the chap a €5 tip as the job was done to a satisfactory level and could be considered a bargain.

For €39 it's a bargain. Pitty the rain is back and the heat is gone though... probably won't need the air-con again for another 2 months!

The only difference between CC and AC are the controls. The hardware is identical.

With CC you set a temp. With AC you can alter the temp. manually.

Just to add, when I had my car serviced yesterday I mentioned the Fast Fit offer to the dealer (Castle Subaru, in Bray) and they did the job for the same price. Well, plus a pollen filter for €26.

You can check the pressure in the system with the tool : http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Car-Air-Conditioning-Top-Up-Check-Charge-Hose-/120932107057?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c281d8331#ht_2963wt_1114

Then can make your mind - if 0 go for profies, if some pressure left - take a chance to top up

Obviously it is illegal to fill yourself http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-Your-Car's-Air-Conditioner

Do they test compression first do you know? Car's pretty old, and I don't want to be buying a tool that'll get used once every 3 or 4 years. :)

Full climate control on auto a/c should mean cool, heat and reheat capability with auto function or manual.
Reheat is where we hold the compressor clutch on, regardless of outside ambient and pulse (PID modulate) the hot water valve in the heating system to 'match' the cooling capacity. Hence we are dehumidifying the discharge (supply) air while holding the RA (return air) temperature constant.

PS - this is brilliant for clearing up fogged windows. Most tour buses and de luxe coaches use a scaled version of this.

I'm pretty sure the machine they use does a test before they start to regas, they were had a read out of the starting coolant levels, and the level after the re-gas.
