The Omni shopping centre is about a 15-20 minute walk from campus. It's got Tesco, New Look, Penneys, a cinema and lots of food places. It's grand for getting most things. Full list of shops here. There's a number of Spars within 5 minutes of DCU (on campus, on the Ballymun Road and at Shanowen) for food shopping.

For proper clothes shopping or to get anything specialised, the bus journey is about 20-25 minutes to the O'Connell Street/Henry Street area and around 25-30 minutes to the Grafton Street area.

I'm confused by what you mean by life on campus, but it really is what you make of it.

As well as the Omni, local shops and Spar, there's also the 9 which goes to Charlestown Shopping Centre from right outside DCU, and the 17A is five/ten minutes walk away from DCU (depending on your speed, it's not far) which goes to Blanchardstown Shopping Centre.
