    need some help with this.

in march i received an order from american eagle(us) to my home (ireland)

dhl did not issue any form of invoice for the vat on the delivery, and now there looking for payment, without issuing the vat document.

i am willing to pay, but, dont i need to have a physical receipt from them to pay?

(its been 10 weeks and no contact until now)

Have you asked for the invoice?

You already know you are liable for the charges, so why not just pay?

They act as a clearing agent for the Revenue, so tend not to give an invoice on delivery.

i have asked for the invoice, but, as i was not contacted until today, by a phone call from a mobile number, im a little wary about the authenticity of the call.

Just deal with DHL offices and ignore mobile phone numbers. I'm sure a call to DHL office will sort it quickly.

Same thing happened me with Fedex. They just handed over the package and I signed for it. Had already started selling the stock and paid VAT on each sale when they wanted VAT from the import plus a fee. I disputed it and they accepted they were at fault. A few weeks later I got another email asking for payment!

DHL wont deliver unless they receive payment for any taxes & duties owed.

Yes, they will, and they follow up with an invoice. I have been down this road numerous times.

I deal with DHL every day in work and they won't deliver without the duties being paid, either by the shipper or the receiver. It's the same story if we send something outside if the EU, if something has duties owed, we get the option of waiting for the receiver to pay the duties or we pay them ourselves. I confirmed this with the driver that collects from us every evening.

I've queried this further with DHL after I received a delivery earlier today from American Eagle and wasn't asked for any duty payments (much like the OP)

What our Account Manager in DHL told me was that in most circumstances, customs will inform DHL of any duties being owed before the package is out for delivery, and DHL then look for payment, but in some circumstances customs don't inform DHL for days/weeks which seems to be the situation the OP is in, and the situation I'll probably be in a few weeks down the line (probably be more complicated for me, but anyway!)

Apologies gerryk, the advice you provided was indeed correct. HOpe this helps the OP out.
