I am wondering if anyone can tell me what the morning commute is like ftom Enfield to Castleknock and City Centre? I work in City Centre and the missus works in Castleknock. We are thinking of buying a site in Enfield and commuting to Dublin.

Try Kearns transport, leaves main st at various times and it's €25 for a 10 trip ticket drops at Batchelors walk

For Castleknock you'll need the train

We would be driving, do you know how long that would take?

45mins to an hour depending on what time you leave.

M4 - palmerston, through Chapelisold then through Phoenix park then on to NCR. Straight run only delay is in Phibsboro

OP, are you intending to drop the OH in Castleknock and then drive into town? If so, you are going to either via the Toll on the M 50 and off at the N 3 for Castleknock and then into town via the often manic Navan Road or across the Liffey at Lucan or Chapelizod and into Castleknock via the back roads; not fun at the best of times but a nightmare in the school term. Whichever you choose, you are looking at at least 20 minute of a diversion off route.

If possible, could the PH park the car at her work and you train in and out from there?

Well she works im admin at Castleknock College so she would not need to go near the park. Just up by the chappilizod and toward the college, its a straight run. My question is how bad is it at rush hour from Lucan towards the turn off to Chapilizod?

I need to go to Ringsend and I can drive or get public transport. Any options there?

You'd want to factor in the increased cost of relying on a car for a commute of that distance over the longer term.

I would hope to get a job closer to home and on the outskirts of Dublin in the long term

If AA roadwatch is anything to go by, it's always seems to be slow but never standstill. Getting turned uphill at Chapelizod can take a few minutes so as you have other school traffic ahead of you but you should know the layout there already. Onwards, the train from Castleknock or Coolmine and change for a Dart to either Grand Canal Dock or Lansdowne Road would be probably quicker than driving slap bang all the way into the city.

Is there much of a difference going via the M4 toll to not using it?

It depends. Off-peak no, not much difference, when I lived in Dublin and used to drive down the country I used to dodge the M4 toll most of the time because it made so little difference and I'd have €2.90 more in my pocket.

However, in peak times, e.g. leaving the city in the weekday evenings, traffic on the old road can be brutal - one time I was going outbound on Friday evening and saw a mile long tailback of slow moving cars getting off the motorway - daily commuters I figured - seeing the mess I decided to stay on and pay the toll rather than be caught up in it.

There was also more than one occasion where I was returing to Dublin in the evening time, took the old road (because I was going against the peak flow) and saw on the other side of the road, one long tailback of traffic going ALL THE WAY from Enfield to J8, with more streaming off from the M4 at little better than a snails pace.

I also tried various non M50 routes from the N4 to the N3 from time to time and I wouldn't recommend those either, roads in that area are rubbish, even at the best of times.

In short, with a train system running from Enfield by Castleknock into the City Centre, if you are going to do this I would recommend you get the train. If you do choose to drive it you will most likely be going with a heavy peak flow in both directions.
