    hi there

i found a company in donegal that does 'self drive classic cars' where you hire the car for a set period in 24 hour blocks. i'm looking for something similar [preferably a convertible] in connaught, and if possible in mayo/sligo. it's a present for my husband -it's the novelty really of driving down the gorgeous bangor/mullranny/westport road to the restaurant in a classic car... but most classic car hire places i've found will only supply the car with their own driver.

anyone know of anywhere i could hire a convertible for 24 hours and drive it ourselves?

This is the only place like that I know of...I don't know if that's any nearer to you than the other place you found in Donegal.

thanks for that firefly. their e-type jag is *exactly* what i had in mind. unfortunately their hire period only goes from morning till 7 or 8 pm so you're talking over €1200 for two days including deposit. i realise you get the deposit back but that's just not in my budget as an initial outlay. guess i'll just have to give up on the idea :(

I hired the e-type about two years ago for the weekend for my wife. I'd talk to the company about it before you rule it out. I found them lovely people to deal with and I'm sure that you could come to some arrangement/deal. BTW the e-type was wonderful.

it's downy fluff actually dougal!! :p

to be honest my knowledge of classic cars extends to a passing appreciation for the design - and by that i mean i'm like a magpie - ''ooh look, curvy bonnet, nice wheel arches!''. i don't have an appreciation of the merits of one over another. neither does my OH really. we were going to rent something that looked nice for our honeymoon but couldn't afford it in the end and he was gutted at the time. we ended up with a dodge charger [good job gas was cheap in the states]. i just want to be able to surprise him with driving a neat looking car down to westport for his birthday dinner so would be grateful for anything i could get.

so anyway where abouts in the country are you? like - are you teasing me with these beauties or would you like to take this to PM where we can talk business ;)

Hi artyeva...not sure where you're getting €1200 from for that E-type. It shows €199 per day on their website. You get the deposit back!! We rented their Zodiac for €150.
