Recently purchased a mitsubishi carisma 1.6 petrol. Took her for an nct today as she was bought for small money without one. On the way home from the nct the car refused to idle i.e. The engine cut out when the car wasnt in gear. Problem improved as i drove further but the idle speed was erratic, high sometimes and very very low others. Seems to be worse when engine is cold. Have a spare scrap car so i changed the mass flow unit but made no diff. Any ideas because im very confused?

Im no expert but try the Idle air Control Valve. This could be sticking. Take it out of the scrap car and change out but chances are it will also be sticking... Take it off leave the ports (opposite side to the terminals)soak overnight in either carb cleaner or petrol.. Clean welll off and refit..

If its the GDi engine that I am suspecting it is.. It dont like being driven easy as the breather system cloggs up with gunk from the crank case. This gunk lodges in the inlet manifold and stuffs all teh working bits with gunk if driven easy.

I am not going to encourage bad behaviour here nor am I trying to be funny but take it and redden it first, second, third and fleece the lining out of it with bootfuls of hard acceleration.. its called an Italian tune up ..Im not saying drive like a looney but be resonsible about when/where you do it.....

Volvo 1.6 and 1.8 V/S40 suffer the same way and its a Mitsy engine in them. Its a well documented practice

shes not a Gdi just ordinary multipoint fuel injection. Wheres is this valve located? Ive noticed too that the more i drive the car the less of a problem its becoming!
