    "Steal" being the operative word.

"I got it from my friend because he owed me money"

"I don't know anything about it except that it's worth £4000"

"It's wired for a computer, but I...eh...forgot to get the computer from my friend"

    Keep away.

The bike isn't worth £4k anyway, not even close.

Yeah steal probably literally, but how much do you guys think its worth

Impossible to tell based on the limited pictures. Brand new, I'd guess £1,000, at most.

The tyres are the best bit on that thing.

I might be wrong, but the cassette looks like a 9 speed (or 8 speed?)

100 of the Queen's good pounds is about all I'd offer.

Do you just want a bike for knocking around the city or are you looking for something to get further afield on?

Looking to to do a road trip over the summer from rome to milan. 100 pounds at most really? - Perhaps I should call it off..

    I wouldn't take that to Milano's never mind Milan:D

Seriously though, Rome to Milan is about what? 500 to 600km - do you need something you can carry gear on because that thing doesn't seem have the necessary attachment points for a pannier or two.

Make sure you get a very definite safe and comfortable route sorted before you go. I'm just back from a trip from across Italy from Venice.

Anything bigger than a back road just isn't enjoyable over there.

On the flip-side, the back roads ban trucks, are generally in good nick and the country is beautiful but it meant picking up a load of maps over there and a lot of planning each morning and extra navigation throughout the day.

I have a pannier that attaches to a seatpost. So far not looking good though - guess I should back out of this one then. Cheers for the advice guys - appreciate it

I'd be wary about buying a bke like that. Like others have said, its possible that its stolen. Ask can you check the serial number with the police and see what his reaction is...

He went down to 200 in the end, but yeah this is a dodgey deal altogether. I have opted out now

You did the right thing staying away. Regardless of it's legality it's worth no more than £100.

Generally, in London anyone called 'Spencer' is a tea leaf.
