Read in the journal that anything up to €14.50 a bale.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,007 ✭✭✭Grecco

I dont think too many farmers would give €14.50 to a contractor after supplying the plastic for him as well.
Cut bale and wrap, farmer supplies the plastic, cheque at the gate €9.50

I'd say the €14.50 includes the wrap. Otherwise how could you pay it and supply the wrap too, it would be madness ted, just madness.

Cut bale and wrap 11 euro. Farmer supplies plastic and you get a reciept for that. I know lads doing it for 8 cash but no receipt from them.

Tis madness alright Dougal but that was excluding wrap according to the journal.
With wrap included they priced it at anything up to €17.00 a bale !

€11 a bale here too, that includes mowing, baling and wrapping, Farmer suppling the wrap

wrap @ €82 a roll in this part of the country

I'd say it must cost at least €30 to make a bale when you take in Wrap, Fertiliser and Diesel  and your time for free :pac:

    Relax will you,
All I`m saying is he gives me a receipt for €9.50 per bale including VAT. I know he`s VAT registered, I`m not but I will still use the full €9.50 receipt as an expense.

only 72 but its going to be good,it did not get enough of p k as it was a thin crop,so much for 3000 gallons of slurry and 80 units of nitro , i took out 3 paddocks as well and they had 18 bales on it. should have another 12 acres ready in 10 -14 days time and more paddocks if we get a little rain to keep the grass ahead of the cows.

....not worrying about machines breaking down.... dead right. Sometimes contractors are the only job.

Those Keltics mightn't get up the bothreens or be able to turn into the cabbage gardens around here though :p

Too many part time farmers around here Tippman like driving tractors  If contractor offered service I would take it up.

Is that price you quoted with you or contractor suppying wrap?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8 dmjames

getting slightly away from the price of baling but has anyone come across anyone putting a hole in the bottom of the bales if they are very wet before they store them to let out the water .told it is common enough practice . never heard of it being done ,[paid 12 a bale with extra wrapping this year ,.the extra plastic is a great job ]

why dont farmers bale it themselves and save the cost is that not the answer lads sorry for jumping in just curious?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,158 ✭✭✭jimmy G M

How many bales would you get from a roll of wrap, standard wrap amount?. Contractor we get usually supplies wrap, however he would also do the job and we supply the wrap if we wanted. Dunno if there is any advantage to this though?

32 bales per roll isn't it??

Our contractor asked us to supply the wrap as he didn't want money tied up buying it - which was fair enough as it made no difference to us

We took a serious look at it this year and to be honest there wasn't a huge saving by the time the mower conditioner, baler, wrapper, bale trailer and grab were bought, and diesel and repairs/maintainence paid for

Couple that with it being peak AI season and we have a few hundred thousand gallons of slurry to spread after the silage and it would just be bringing too much work on ourselves for not a whole lot if savings

    But every farm is different
