What happens if an Amazon return goes missing?

I returned a monitor to amazon.de using their free returns label on the 15th and they have not received it. I got the post office to stamp date & sign the amazon form (part of the delivery label print out) that shows proof I did indeed post it.

My question is, who is responsible if the package goes missing, and who gets hit with the cost?

I have looked through their FAQ's etc. but can't find anything about what would happen, but it does say that if they don't have the item back within 30 days, they will charge my card for another one.

    Thanks.

Did you get a certificate of postage from the post office to provide proof that you posted it back?

They could have it back, they might not have processed it yet

True, however I mailed them yesterday as the returns tracking for the item the website under 'my returns' never updated. Turns out its not actual tracking, just updates when they get the item.

They didn't have it yet, but as you say they might not have processed it. I'm sure there's such a thing as a lazy German :).

Still like to know who would be responsible, as I returned it exactly as recommended and have a signature of receipt from an post, I would imagine the carrier?

I'm a bit nervous if being hit by a sly card charge, the item was over €500.

I'd be nervous if I sent it back unrecorded and uninsured.

    Consider:

If Amazon shipped you a monitor and it didn't show who would be responsible for replacing it? They might never have shipped it, the address might be wrong, the box might be empty, right? Amazon responsible.

If I ship a monitor, etc, I am responsible - but might be able to implicate the carrier.

The shipper is required to furnish proof of delivery, not of shipping.

Point taken. However I used the recommended method as I assumed that it was traceable, based on a 'track returns' section on their site,

I expect you'll be OK, that it's not a priority processing returns, and it's going to show up.

I've only ever returned one thing to amazon (uk), for me it was a small item, and it was posted to Dublin. I would guess that the longest it took to get to Dublin was 2 days, but it took 10 working days before I heard anything and that was in the form of a refund confirmation, tracking never worked for me either.
