Iphone3 help needed for new user

    sorry if this is a stupid question but ..
    Bought a 2nd hand iphone3 off a friend.o2 unlocked it and when I connected to iTunes I could use my sim. We erased all content using the setting in the phone menu. Now each time I try to download an app it says ios4 but iTunes says there are no updates any help appreciated:)

    If itunes cannot find an update you may need to manually install iOS. The link below is a direct download for iOS5.

    Connect your device to the computer using the USB cable and wait for iTunes to detect it.
    Once your device has been detected – follow the steps below.
    Hold the Shift key and then click on the “Check for Update/Update” button.In the next dialog browse to the file that you downloaded from the link above.

    iTunes will now use the IPSW file and update your device to iOS 5. The process should take around 10-20 minutes.

    If you wish to install iOS 4 (4.3.4) a direct link for that download is below.

    this would not work for me when it tried to install said was not compatible? God all I want is a few apps!

    Ios 4.2.1 is the highest an iPhone 3g will go to, which is why the above link wont work.

    apologies ive just realised it is actually a 2g-looks like ive been stung :( anybody know if there is way i can get apps or do anything with it keeps telling me i need ios4 to get apps.

    In the link it says it will work on all iPod touches and anything after the original iPhone. The app store doesn't work either
