    Synopsis revealed

"From acclaimed filmmaker Guillermo del Toro comes Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ epic sci-fi action adventure “Pacific Rim.”

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) - who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse"

That sounds crazy and fantastic in the very best way. Can't wait to see what Del Toro comes up with. His 'creature' work is outstanding, really looking forward to this.

Also stars Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy), Idris Elba (The Wire), Rinko Kikuchi (The Brothers Bloom), Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses) and Ron Perlman.

Sounds fantastic all right, but part of me is still gutted he's not making At The Mountains Of Madness :(

Definitely :( It would have been immense. Maybe he'll revisit it further down the line when they hype surrounding Prometheus is long forgotten.

Nice poster, love the sense of size they give the Jaegers using the birds. Really looking forward to this.

    From: http://herocomplex.latimes.com/2011/06/27/guillermo-del-toro-on-mountains-of-madness-im-not-giving-up/
“Pacific Rim” is scheduled to open in 2013, and after it’s completed Del Toro said he has every intention of turning his attention back to Lovecraft’s frigid alien landscapes. “I’m going to keep pursuing it,” he said. “Universal is still really interested in doing it. Coming out of ‘Pacific Rim,’ I intend to see if we can do it immediately.

Del Toro...... Giant monsters..... Japan....... Giant FREAKIN' ROBOTS!!!!!!!!!!

THAT POSTER!!!!!! TOO MANY EXCLAMATION POINTS!!!!!!!!!!

I know, I know, we've seen little but Del Toro, a great director with a wonderful eye and a certified geek directing a mecha movie? Oh man. Can you imagine the nerdgasm if they show something at comic-con. While we'd all love Mountains of Madness and Hellboy 3, that'll do pig. That'll do

This could potentially be seriously epic if they can pull off the scale convincingly on the big screen. Looking forward to some trailers. :D

That poster & synopsis has me pretty hyped I have to say.

Recently he came out saying Prometheus may have effectively killed At the Mountains of Madness: http://www.firstshowing.net/2012/del-toro-says-prometheus-may-have-killed-mountains-of-madness/

Del Toro's been playing a lot of Halo and Crysis by the looks of those character designs :pac:

I'm not the biggest del Toro fan, but this has the potential to be very interesting if done correctly. Gonna need a lot of money!

Instantly thought of Crysis when I saw that poster.

Still, should be an interesting one. The CGI would have to be top-quality for the set-pieces to really work.

The good thing about robots is they're pretty easy to make look convincing with CGI because they're generally metallic. The scale is the thing they need to get right in this I think, watch an episode of Power Rangers to see how not to do it :pac:

THis could be the best lockbuster of the year if done right, it sounds like the plot for a japanese godzilla type b-movie.

Also getting quite the Evangelion vibe from the synopsis and general concept (mysterious enemy, 'neural bridges', Japan). Hope to hell it's closer to that than Transformers!

I think this could be a massive flop and next year's Speed Racer. Sorry to be such a downer but that synopsis does not fill me with confidence - I think this project is getting a pass from people due to Del Toro and I have a lot of doubts already. At $200m and an original concept with a relatively unknown cast, it's a massive, massive gamble either way.

Why else would films get a 'pass' from people except for those involved in the film? It could be a flop or it could be brilliant, I dont think there's much yet to even half judge either way.

Don't care if it flops as long as its a good movie, the fact that Del Toro is involved gives me hope that it will be. Can't say I've ever given a film a pass until after I've watched it tbh. :)

Couldn't care less about whether it's a financial disaster, but I am simply delighted to see $200 million being spent on an original idea for a change. Increasingly rare these days, and it's what's potentially exciting about this project. Even if it's bad or merely decent, I'd rather ambition fails admirably than not try at all.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 684 ✭✭✭CL7

I care. Every time an original project flops there's less chance that the studio will take a risk in the future. There's plenty of originality to be found in Asian cinema but I think it's sad that a film like Apocalypse Now would have very little chance of getting the go ahead in Hollywood today.

Wow; so people are now snapping to judgement based solely on a studio synopsis & hastily-produced poster for a comic-con? Talk about cutting out the middle man - why wait for a trailer?

Del Toro is a known quantity with a track-record of delivering successful SFX-heavy pieces; he's one of the few directors / writers out there I would trust with 200 million. Andrew Stanton he ain't.

As for originality, there's plenty. It's an unfair comparison to compare it to 'Asia' (which kinda counts half a dozen hollywood-equivalents right there), where generally the only movies we experience are the quality films that get exported to the EU/US. Most of it still garbage, no more than this side of the globe where the same happens in the other direction.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 684 ✭✭✭CL7

I don't think they are. I'm not anyway. I was just making a point that I care if films I'm interested in are financially successful because it's in my self interest to care. Yes there's still plenty of originality to be found but there isn't many original big budget Hollywood projects nowadays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,217 ✭✭✭TheIrishGrover

Well why hope for the best? Why hope for the best when you can predict a flop from a four line synopsis and a poster, ignore it in the cinema and then b1tch and moan about how they don't take chances with movies anymore and then come out on Boards and exclaim how everyone missed a treat in the cinema and why did it flop?

How about we wait until we see trailers, hear reviews...... even, now this may be crazy, but actually SEE the film before you pass judgement.

  • Site Banned Posts: 1,856 ✭✭✭paddy kerins

Wait... has Ron Perlman been cast in this? If not then I'll be :(

OK I take it back, apparently Pacific Rim tore the roof off Comic-Con tonight!

Apparently so yes. 3 screen presentation and reports from people who saw it, seems most of them were blown away. Del Toro also said there's a 6 month media blackout now after Comic Con. Which actually makes me look forward to it more, with the less I see of it until it's out.

Here's the Pacific Rim panel from Comic Con. I haven't watched it yet myself, so no idea if it's worth your while, but it certainly doesn't contain any of the film footage.

Hmmmm, I dunno - scale and heft is everything with something this big, so if the CGI doesn't feel solid & heavy enough, it just won't work as an effect. King Kong was a good example of big CGi creations feeling solid.

I'd say it's most likely a pre-viz or a shot that's still in the early stages of animation

Seems that way, but I like the style of it. Less 'busy' than I expected.

Is...is that Glados as the voice of the computer?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,014 ✭✭✭✭Corholio

Been looking forward to it since first heard Del Toro was doing it, trailer looks great. Really like the look of the Kaiju. Although only got a brief clip of it, the way they control the Jaeger's looks quite unique. Consider me psyched for it.

Yes that is Ellen McLain (Glados) as the voice.

They're some weighty giant robots at least!

I hope the film isn't just a disaster movie featuring giant robots beating the **** out of each other. Well, I think I'd be cool with a good 50% of the film being nothing but giant robots beating the **** out of each other, but fingers crossed Del Toro will be able to differentiate the film from the pack during the downtime.

    Yeah, that's definitely her:
    http://kotaku.com/5968037/see-glados-in-del-toros-new-blockbuster-movie-trailer-no-really

As for the trailer - I'm actually kinda disappointed. I guess as an unapologetic DelToro fanboy, I was expecting something more imaginative in the creature design - big stompy robots don't move me (despite what my avatar suggests :D) so it doesn't initially 'feel' like a delToro project. Plus the CGI looks very poor in spots - hopefully that's WIP for the trailer.

I am loving the international vibe, so with luck it'll all be suitably globe hopping. I also enjoy how the robots feel weighty & solid in their movements, makes a feckin' change!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,548 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Personally I thought that trailer was a triumph. Guess I'll make a note here to go see it.....

    Ok, I'll stop.

But trailer looks pretty cool. Definitely plan on seeing it. Dunno what to think about Idris Elba's President Whitmore type speech.

Can't wait to see Jax and Clay turn up in these next season. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,295 ✭✭✭✭Duggy747

Looks great, robots do look like they have weight and oomph to them.

Hope Del Toro can offer something different, don't really need another "Great CGI, fùckin' woeful story and cheesy dialogue" blockbuster.

I think he's just a fan & wanted to bring Ellen McLain / GLaDOS into the production somehow.
Of course, if he's went to those lengths to have a pitch-perfect GLaDOS, there have to be some Portal references in the script :)

"Okay, look: We both said a lot of things that you're going to regret, but I think we can put our differences behind us; for science... you monster."

Was honestly expecting a more crafted trailer than that one but the inclusion of the pitch-perfect GLaDOS was a nice and unexpected surprise. This has gone from Evangelion meets Godzilla to Evangelion meets Godzilla meets Portal :D
