Birch Sawfly (was - Identify this insect)

    I came across this guy in the garden today .. bigger than a 2 euro coin :eek:

    I assume it's some sort of beetle, can anyone confirm ?

    It's a Birch Sawfly cimbex femoratus
    The larva which look like moth/butterfly caterpillars feed on Birch.

    It is not a beetle, because one pair of wings in beetles forms the outer casing. On this insect, both pairs of wings are visible and are used for flying.
