Soot smell from Chimney

Hi we got the chimney (open fire) cleaned in approx Feb. Didn't light the fire yesterday and today there is a strong soot smell in the room and adjoining room, just wondering if anyone can tell me why this might be happening and what if anything I can do, thanks.
