Ford Focus Diesel 2008+. (Old topic)

    I am looking at buying a Ford Focus diesel car. 2008 or 2009 version.

    When I search online, there seems to be many different sized engines for this model: e.g. 1.5, 1.6, 1.8 etc

    Is there much of a difference here or do I need to watch out for any?

    There are 2 different cc diesel engines available then

    a 1.8 TD 115hp,
    this is a dinosaur of an engine dating back to the Sierra. Dropped from the range around 09 AFAIK due to emissions. The DMF is guaranteed to fail at around 100kmiles. Other than that a very reliable engine

    a 1560cc TD
    This is a newer 16v engine developed by Ford, Peugeot & Citroen. Its also now used in Volvos, BMW's and Suzukis.
    In 2008 there were 2 power options a 90 & 110hp. The 110hp is the best, but this engine demands proper oil at the right service interval. Also very reliable

    Buy a 110hp 1.6

    Just keep in mind if a DPF equipped 1.6 they don't like short journeys.

    Are you referring to that particular engine or dpf in general?

    The 1.6 comes in DPF (110bhp) an non DPF (90bhp), if used for short journeys avoid the 110.

    That is debatable.
    I have a DPF in my car
    Mostly stop/start short journeys. Never yet saw and regen lights in the dash ;)

    When the power shift gearbox was launched on the facelift focus there was a 2 litre 110bhp model, however a 136bhp model was always available in the UK. To me that was the best engine for the focus as it had a six speed gearbox and reasonable performance.

    Have the 1.8 TDCI in an '06 Focus CMax (115 hp), DMF still going well at 220k km, so fingers crossed. According to many I should be on my third by now.
    If it does go, I might consider a solid conversion, but don't fix what's not broke.
    Other than that a great engine, of course it's a tad more agricultural sounding than the newer one, but return 50 mpg week in, week out. Nice torque from it, around town you can keep it between 1-2k rpm without any problems.
    It is true about this engine being ancient, I had a 1980's MKIII Escort breadvan with the 1.6 diesel engine in it, basically the same engine, of course head and injection system worked over heavily and the turbo and intercooler would have been nice back then too.:cool:

    I have the 2.0TDCi which has no DPF. Fine engine indeed. But if you want one be prepared to travel to the UK.

    Very harsh on an engine which doesnn't suffer the same circulation faults as the 1.6 engine. Only the block is similar to the Sierra, everything else is different. And better too.

    DPF = Diesel Particulate Filter, this is designed to burn off the dirty particles that diesel engines produce in order to reduce polution. The DPF needs to operate at a very high temperature to burn these particles, in order to do this the engine needs to be running for a certain length of time to achieve optimal temperature. This cannot be achieved fully if the car is used for short trips as the engine is not warmed up, this leads to the DPF getting blocked with particles, eventually it will get so blocked that the DPF cannot do it's job and the car will experience a lack of power and an warning will appear on the dash. In some cases the DPF can be removed/cleaned but mine in my old Volvo with the same 1.6 engine as the Focus cost circa €1k to replace.

    so just to recap here, the 90hp engine has no DPF? whats the difference in performance and consumption between the 110 and 90 engines?

    No appreciable difference in fuel consumption, but performance wise the 110bhp version is way better.
