Recruitment agencies calling from private numbers.

I recently put my CV on monster.ie and have been contacted by about 10 agencies so far. About half of these seem to be calling from a private number, is there any reason fro this? I do answer private numbers but not while working(3 months left on current contract). Any that do call from a private number do so about 3-4 times in a half hour and then just leave a message. Surely it's much easier leave a message after the 1st call or just send an email. Anyone know the reason private numbers are used? If I had a missed call from a number I would call back later that evening anyway.

It is so companies can't easily screen their calls when they are cold calling.

Could be that they're calling from a landline which by default is set to private number. I don't know how to undo such a setting on a landline and I suspect it is the same for many others. If anyone could enlighten us that'd be great.

If memory serves, put 142 before the number you're dialing and it should show your number for that call.

Is there typicaly a setting that allows you to show your landline number for all calls ? It's probably in the menu somewhere on digital phones, I'd say people with the old style phone might just have to rely on the 142 trick, or maybe their operator can adjust the settings perhaps.

Back in the days when I was doing telecom work I got a few requests from recruitment agencies asking us to always block their number on all outgoing phone lines. Reason is as Mr Loverman said; to stop people from blocking them cold calling through to managers etc. on a reception level and not to advertise who they are going after to the receptionist.

The easiest way to deal with this is get yourself a free or cheap SIM and put it in an old phone, and put that number up as your contact number... and put that phone on silent. So when the phone starts hopping (initially...) you know it´s definitely an agency.
