Intolerance to eggs?

    I'm trying to follow a Paleo/primal sort of diet, but I'm beginning to think I must have some sort of an intolerance to eggs.

    I really like eggs, but I've noticed that I tend to get very bad diarrhoea within 30 minutes of eating them. :o I've also started to feel quite queasy while eating them.

    I don't think this is anything new; it's just that I'm eating them more now than I used to, as part of my new diet. Still not an excessive amount though; maybe two a day, with either breakfast or dinner.

    Is it better to stick it out and hope that my body adjusts? Or should I cut out eggs completely for a while? Or permanently? I'd really rather not ... I find myself a bit limited in food choices these days, even with eggs included in my diet.

    But it seems wasteful to keep eating them, as I tend to have loads of veg with them, and there's no point if it's going to be "evacuated" ( :o ) so quickly, I'm probably not gaining any nutritional benefit from the meal at all.

    It's possible, but 30 minutes sounds like a very quick reaction. So it could be something else.

    The only way to know for sure is to eat them in isolation. So first thing in the morning, assuming you're feeling fine, have two boiled eggs and nothing else - no tea, coffee, etc. Water is probably OK, but it would be best to consume nothing but the eggs. Then wait two hours without eating/drinking anything to see if you react. If you don't, then it's probably something else.

    Diarrhoea doesn't "evacuate" the food in your stomach, certainly not within 30 minutes anyway. It would have to be very prolonged to result in malnutrition, so you are still getting the "good" out of what you're eating.

    This happened me too, I stopped eating eggs for a while and then I could start eating them again, albeit never first thing in the morning and always accompanied by something else.

    Edit: Raw egg yolks never seemed to have this effect but I don't know if you want to go down that route.

    I started eating porridge for breakfast which gave me horrendous heartburn at first but if I give it a good soak overnight and don't eat it with 30 mins of waking I seem to tolerate it fine.

    I'll try that, eating the eggs on their own, for a few days, see if it keeps happening! It's good to know that I'm hopefully still getting the goodness out of the veg etc anyways.

    You know, now that you mention it, I think I'm more likely to have that reaction when I eat them first thing in the morning, rather than later on in the day. Strange!

    Thanks for the suggestion re. porridge, I don't really like it though, especially during the summer. If I don't have eggs for breakfast, I usually have Greek yogurt with blueberries and flaxseed - that seems to keep me going nicely through to lunchtime!
