Game over

That's it. Game over. We may pack up. Chuck it in. We fought the good fight but that's it.

On this morning's radio there was a report that science is still baffled by how birds navigate when migrating. They can find no logical explanation.

So, I hate to admit it, but the only explanation is Allah.

Just out of interest, which radio station?
Because science isn't really that baffled:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_migration
It's more a case of not being entirely clear which birds use which methods under which circumstances.

What? Are you sure? I've just sold everything and given it to the poor like god said.

I think it was Good Moaning Ireland on RTE 1 but it is possible that it was Newspeak as I switch between the two when sports come on. I did think it was rubbish, just filling airtime between the ads.

Poster sounding a bit mental, but I'll read on.

Right, doesn't really warrant the outburst in the first sentence but I'll see how it goes...

You lost me completely. You're gauging from one "report" on a small radio station that religion (in this case I'm not sure why you chose Islam) won.

Oh, believe me I get the sarcasm. It's just that your example is a little too forced.

Pish he could not guide that many birds with just two hands. Its clearly the Spag Monster who has enough noodle appendages to dedicate one to each bird. They follow it a bit like in Donnie Darko you see.

F*ckin' migrations, how do they work

It's quite obvious that birds have their paths predetermined by their inbuilt matrix coding.

I'm going to give you a huge amount of credit and assume that this post was some sort of Poe's law double bluff.

Just like that really, because it operates on two levels. Firstly for the really thick ones who genuinely can't understand anything, they go for the "god of the gaps" explanation straight away. Secondly the smarter ones who see the science behind it, but then say to you "explain gravity, explain electromagnetism, and where they came from." By which time the radio station has already moved on to the sports news.

I watched something recently about a bird sanctuary in Australia where they can't let the newborn chicks of a certain species see the sky day or night if they are going to be transferred to another sanctuary as they use the stars to chart their territory and will just fly back to the original sanctuary if they catch only one look at the sky.

So - I think I'll keep my athiesm hat on, thank you very much. :p

The kind of birds I'm interested in can't fly away.
    Roast chicken and crispy duck.

The birds use Sat Nav, duh.

Can he guide them a little further away from jet intakes while he's at it?

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bird_strike
Bird strikes are a significant threat to flight safety, and have caused a number of accidents with human casualties.

It is the jet that is in the wrong place. And anyway, how come science can't invent a jet engine that doesn't inhale birds?

'Scuse me, the jets are clearly operating in accordance with air traffic control clearance, the geese (the most massive and reckless of birds) blithely choose not to - the goose always comes off worst, so a rethink on their part is needed.
And if you want an engine that doesn't inhale birds, you need one that doesn't inhale air - a rocket in other words - I'm all in favour of this of course but it's not exactly compatible with low-cost travel.

I'm not allowed read/watch/listen to mainstream media coverage of science anymore. Something about my "shouty soapboxing" being stressful to listen to.

I inhale air but not flying insects (mostly). It's smaller scale but the same principle.

Unlike a jet engine you have a near-instant reverse thrust reflex when a foreign body is detected in your air intake system (sneezing and coughing).

They could probably put some sort of rigid honeycomb over the front of the engine but it would add weight, restrict airflow, and need cleaning.

Ultimately the decision to bird-proof an engine would come down to cost versus risk and it has probably been worked out, long ago, that birds do not pose a great enough risk to justify the costs and drop in performance of the engines/aircraft.

The sneezing engine sounds good and it could fly through volcano ash.
I think we need to get a team of engineers onto this right away.

Allegedly, birds can divide by zero. Therefore God did it.
