Yesterday at Dublin Airport

    I flew over and back to England yesterday on Ryanair and two things happened at Dublin airport that I have never seen before.

    Both runways were in use and we almost were part of a simultaneous takeoff but the other plane managed to lift off just as we hit the throttle.

    The other thing was we landed back on the same runway which is not unusual but in the opposite direction, which is.

    I am guessing both of the above are down to the fact that there was no wind yesterday but rare enough occurrences in Dublin I would think.

    You took off on R28 but landed in the opposite direction as a sea breeze developed during the day and they switched runways, as is normal.

    In times of peak traffic and light winds they use both 28 and 34 for takeoffs. With light westerly to northwesterly winds yesterday morning either runway would give the similar takeoff conditions, but if the other plane rotated earlier then maybe they had just slightly more of the headwind and/or the plane was lighter. I'm assuming it was the same type of plane as yours?

    Just looked up the runway map.

    We took off on 34 and landed back on 16. The flight out was at 06:50 and the return landed at 16:30.

    The other plane was a Boeing 737 like ours but it was half way down 28 before we got to our runway.

    It's called 'dual runway ops' and only occurs between 0630 and 0800 if wind conditions permit.

    It is to assist in getting the large number of early morning traffic on its' way.

    There is no dual runway landing ops in Dublin. RW16 is only used during exceptionally high northerly winds which wasn't the case on this day. I assume you just got your orientation mixed up. Also what side of the aircraft were you looking out of?

    Well 16 and 28 are to completely different directions so I doubt they were both in use at the same time (ignoring that DUB doesn't do dual rwy arrivals) In fact 28/16 pretty much head towards each other, so ATC would not do so.

    Also I would hazard a guess that if you landed on 16 (south-easterly winds over the last few days so possible) you then turned left to taxi onstand, this would have RWY28 behind the aircraft, so difficult to see another aircraft land on 28.

    It's possible I got mixed up, I was looking out the left side but from the aisle.

    what dacian said re opposite direction approaches. there was a runway change from 10 to 28 around four o'clock whick required some backtracking for a/c who had been taxiing for 10 which wouldn't have helped anyone staring out a tiny window trying to guess what was going out.

    Joe, I have just done a playback on www.Flightradar24.com, the FR445 with callsign RYR84BU used runway 10 along all other landing and departing traffic.

    Sorry, I was hoping you were partly right!
