Unless you were paying rent from 07 December 2010, you won't qualify for any relief.

You could back-claim to then if you were renting at the time but not claiming the relief.

However the relief is applied against your income tax. Which would mean that you don't qualify at all, as you weren't paying income tax as at 07 December 2010 -even if you were renting then.

Most of the info is here:

    Correct.

Totally incorrect; whether or not one has enough taxable income to utilise the credit doesn't affect entitlement to the credit.

    Correct.

    Correct

I think the poster means that the OP will get no tax refund for the years where there was no tax paid to get relief on

That's not how I read it - "you don't qualify AT ALL"; only one way of interpreting that IMHO!

Hi, I'm in a similar situation to the OP. Sharing apartment with a few friends, the total rent is €1,200 a month, but I only pay €375 a month. So should I put down €375? My only concern is that we all pay together, so as far as the landlord is concerned we pay €1,200, he's would not know how it is split up.

    Thanks :)

P.S. Sorry for bringing up an old thread, didn't see the need making a new one for the same question.

You claim for your portion. It doesn't make sense to claim more than you pay. So long as you have some sort of proof to back up the amount you pay, (in case its ever looked for) you are fine to claim your portion.

Hi, don't want to start a new thread so will just ask here if it's ok.

It's been a while since I claimed a tax refund, (april 2010) and at the time I claimed for rent relief. I was under the impression that since 07 Dec 2010 nobody was eligible anymore, but if I have read this thread correctly, as I was living in rented accommodation since before 07 Dec 2010, I am still eligible to claim?

That's correct. However, if you claimed the rent tax credit before, it normally gets added to your standard credits at the start of each tax year. Login to your paye anytime account to check if it was already granted to you.
