Cohabiting vs Living Alone

Hi I wonder if someone can enlighten me. For cohabiting friends, A is on disability but working part time on a scheme designed for people with depression etc, then B is unemployed. What is the max they can earn together?

A earns 300 with chronic depression and rehab part time job, B should earn 188 for jobseeker allowance but B will certainly NOT get that amount if the cohabiting friend earns 300?

My guess is that B will get nothing or will get a severely reduced allowance, and then A will lose Fuel allowance etc so I wonder would B not be better off living alone? That way B would get living alone allowance, full JSA, rent allowance, fuel allowance etc... I really cannot see how A and B benefit from cohabiting under the present welfare scheme, especially when this is a friendship, not a relationship.

Could the informed and enlightened please shed some light or agree/disagree and why.

    Thanks,
    ND.

Max payment for a person with a dependent adult on a means tested payment is €312.80.

If you wish to speculate about the effect on the relationship, this forum is not the place for that.

No, I do not wish to speculate about the effect on the relationship, I will edit my post to delete the bit about the relationship however in fairness I think the effect on the relationship would be related to this because an eventual break up in the friendship would be triggered by State Benefits being cut.

Also, could you please explain what you mean by dependent adult? Adult A does suffer from depression but A is not dependent on B, not financially anyway. At the moment, B is on Jobseekers Benefit (stamps) but that will not last forever. When you say 'dependent adult', do you mean B will become dependent on A or was my post not clear and you thought A was dependent on B due to the chronic illness (depression)?

I really do not get it. Could you please explain?

    Many thanks and kind regards.

We need some clairification here. Are A & B co-hab as in living together or are A & B just sharing a house?

When 2 adults are living together the dept will class one of them as dependent on the other, it dose not matter who has the main claim.A can claim for B or visa versa the payment will be the same in both cases.

The only exception to this that I can think of is when both are on JSB.

    Hi eastbono

A and B are cohabiting as friends, in different rooms, so sharing the house as well as all house expenses.

    Thanks

Cool, now I get it! Yes, JSB seems to be a different story.

    Thanks for your help!

    cohabiting as friends

In the eyes of the social welfare, there's cohabiting as a couple
    or there's
    house sharing.

If the people in the OP's post can prove they are not in a relationship, they will not get the dependant rate.

If person B is on JSB they have nearly a year to find a job, before they will be means tested for JSA.

Agree with wmpdd3, if they are friends they will not get the dependant rate.

A cohabitant is one of two adults (whether of the same or opposite sex) who live together as a couple in an intimate and committed relationship and who are not close relatives. (sourced from link I posted above).
