    Looking for some help. Need to get 4 new tyres for my passat! yes ouch. Ive rang around a good bit and seem to be getting different prices and no two brands are the same 235/45/17

    Autoguard 95ea
    Lassa 120ea
    Triangle 90ea
    cooper 120ea
    uniroyal 135ea
    hankook 140ea

    Seems uniroyal is decent value but ive no idea on the others. Seen on here triangle seem to be a poor tyre but looking from opinions from those in the know?

    The dealer who gave the cooper price said Lassa are not great and the lad with the uniroyals said cooper are not great... highly confusing and im probably a phone call away from unioryals being crap too!

    Any ideas on a decent brand? I dont do big mileage BTW ~12k a year

    Cheers

    If I were you, I would prefer to get a good brand 205/55 R16 or something similar for about 100 each. You can get nice Bridgestones for that.

    What use are 205/55 R16 tyres when they won't fit on his wheels?

    Stay away from the budget Chinese tyres op, of what you listed the Uniroyal or the Hankook are the ones to go for. I put Hankook ventus S1 evo's on the front of my own car and I'm happy with them so far, acres ahead of the tyres that were on it when I bought it. 135 each in 225/45/17.

    Know a place where you can get Pirelli p6000 for 125/ea , it's in Naas. Take your time looking at prices and brands, so you get best deal possible.

    From that list I would go with the Uniroyal. They are good value at that price.

    Uniroyal Rain Sport 2 is from the list.

    Camskill would do 4 kumho ecsta sports for €477 delivered plus about 30 for fitting, that's 520 for 4, 260 for 2 or 130 each

    Makes the uniroyals look good value

    :confused::confused:

    I was confused too... There is nothing wrong with going one size up/down with tires(as long as manufacturers allow for this), but this is only when you stick to your rim. OP's rim is 17, so no channce to go down that much, and i know of few(lots of) cars when you can't fit smaller wheels than the original ones...

    To be clear i know you can fit smaller/bigger wheels... but when op asks for 17's, no need to recommened smaller ones, even if they are cheaper...

    :confused::confused:

    My point was supposed to be, that for OP's car (Passat) most likely 16 inch rims with standard tyres will suit perfectly (I'm guessing here, as I'm not sure what version of passat is it)
    235/45/R17 I would call a low profile tyres, and obviously these will be more expensive.
    Considering OP listed rather low-budget brands, I would see more point in going down with rim size and getting better brand tyres, than driving on cheapest low-profile tyres.

    I know low-profile tyres are in fashion now, but most likely that's their only advantage on Irish roads. That's why IMHO it's better to go down with a rim size and invest in better brand tyres.

    I had 2 examples over last 2 years with friends from my work. Both cases the same. They got a nice car with huge rims with low profile tyres. They enjoyed it to the moment when tyres were worn, and had to be replaced for a new ones. When they realised about a price, they traded a bigger rims for smaller ones, and got regular size tyres for half the price of low-profile ones. Also they were really impressed how much their vehicle handling capabilities increased by going back to stock tyres.

    Passats normally come wit 16 inches wheels. But when you have 17's that is to much hassle to go down as you have to sell the old ones, and get the new ones...OP wanted new rubber only, price difference between 16 and 17's wouldn't justify changing the alloys...

    BTW:And OP did not buy the cheapest ones, he choose the right tire for his needs

    You know, garage recommendations may often base on profit margin, rather than quality or they may recommend the brand with huge stock.
    So this sometimes makes no sense at all.

    What I can say is I'm driving on Lassa Phenoma tyres for a while and have been very happy with them. Definitely recommended.

    But as I remember, price should not be that much up. You can make a bargain to push it down...

    They can ask for a higher price for a brand, when they need to sell another one....
