I actually just wanted to ask if this was on JUST ESPN or Skysports also?

But we may as well have a matchday thread as well seeing as it's the final I suppose... I'll be rooting for Quins anyhow, although I think they'd be doing well to win it.

Fairly sure it's on ESPN, they have far more AP rights than Sky Sports these days.

Will be rooting for Quins because of O Shea

Don't mind Leicester either though, one of the English teams I have a bit of time for

Do ESPN still try and do the pre and post match coverage in the open air outside the stadium?

Some disaster anytime I saw it, fellas roaring and shouting walking past

lol they were at it for the semis, asking fans who they thought would win :p, pretty dire stuff.

ESPN - live coverage with highlights on both Sky Sports (Saturday) and ITV (Sunday). If you don't subscribe to either Sky Sports or ESPN and want to see the tries without waiting for ITV's coverage usually BBC News Channel (Sports desk) or Sky News (Sportsline) at 7.30pm on Saturday will feature these.

Early tackle from Tuilagi past the horizontal. Lucky to not get a yellow at least. It wasn't particularly dangerous but by the letter of the law...

    Good start from Quins. 3-0.

ye I only found that out last year , you should check out espn classic, they show a lot of classic rugby matchs from over the years.

Quins try. They are bossing Tigers!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,455 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

You guess correctly (almost like there's a rep there)... very lucky chap.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

Quins 27-13 up with 22 minutes to go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,455 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

Can't see them losing it either. One more score will finish it. This penalty should secure it. From the scrum as well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,455 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

Try for Leicester. Smart quick penalty from Youngs. Allen with the try. 10 points in it with 10 to go. All to play for.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

Youngs playing like he was last season, lightning quick number 9.

Ford kicks a penalty, 7 points in it with 9 to go.

    Both Tuilagis have been awful.

Quins just need to keep this in hand for a few minutes, wind the clock down ... talking drop goal to seal it now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,455 ✭✭✭Dave_The_Sheep

Or not. Don't put the damn ball even a bit wide. Keep it tight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,433 ✭✭✭✭thomond2006

Quins win it, well done to Conor O'Shea!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,308 ✭✭✭✭.ak

Fair play to Quins, great start to the campaign. Delighted for O'Shea. Also great to see Leicester make a game out of it. At 30-13 most teams would've gone home.

    great feckin game !

    quinns played some lovely rugby

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,615 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

Quins deserved it but as always Leicisester came back from looking dead and buried. Thought the final penalty to seal it was a bit dodge myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,407 ✭✭✭✭justsomebloke

Bit disappointed in Leicster as they have played better recently but fair play to harlequins and o'shea

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,320 ✭✭✭Teferi

Fair play to Quinns, great for O'Shea. I thought they looked a little lost whenever they were stopped in the middle of the park. Loads of little passes that went nowhere.

Typical tenacious Leicester display in the final 20minutes or so.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,549 ✭✭✭✭Judgement Day

I take back what I said earlier in the thread, at a loose end I found myself watching the game and a great 80 minutes entertainment. Better than tonight's Top 14 Borefest between Toulon and Racing Metro - so bad I put it off after 20 mins despite having money on the outcome.

I'd watch the premiership over top14 anyday of the week

    Delighted for O Shea

Enjoyed the game and delighted for Conor.

I did feel the game was significantly lower quality than the HEC final the week before, and was surprised to see Stephen Jones (I know!) talking it up so much in todays Times.

I had a quick look at the stats just now and they're interesting reading:

    yesterdays game
    Harlequins Leicester Tigers
    2	Tries	2
    1 from 2	Conversion goals	2 from 2
    6 from 7	Penalty goals	3 from 4
77.8%	Kick at goal success	83.3%
    0	Dropped goals	0

    Kick/pass/run
    11	Kicks from hand	18
    143	Passes	70
    114	Runs	51
404	Metres run with ball	360

    Attacking
    50%	Possession	50%
    7	Clean breaks	7
    19	Defenders beaten	10
    19	Offloads	7
    77 from 82 (93.9%)	Rucks won 28 from 31 (90.3%)
    0 from 0	Mauls won 0 from 0
    10	Turnovers conceded	8

    Defensive
    47/10	Tackles made/missed	111/19
    82.5%	Tackling success rate	85.4%

    Set pieces
    5 won, 2 lost (71.4%)	Scrums on own feed 5 won, 0 lost (100.0%)
    7 won, 2 lost (77.8%)	Lineouts on own throw 10 won, 4 lost (71.4%)

    Discipline
    15	Penalties conceded	14
    0/0	Yellow/red cards	1/0

    Last weeks game:
    Leinster Ulster
    5 (1 penalty try)	Tries	1
    4 from 5	Conversion goals	0 from 1
    3 from 4	Penalty goals	3 from 3
77.8%	Kick at goal success	75.0%
    0	Dropped goals	0 (1 missed)

    Kick/pass/run
    18	Kicks from hand	20
    190	Passes	182
    134	Runs	122
570	Metres run with ball	331

    Attacking
    49%	Possession	51%
    47%	Territory	53%
    10	Clean breaks	3
    16	Defenders beaten	8
    8	Offloads	9
    103 from 108 (95.4%)	Rucks won 96 from 102 (94.1%)
    2 from 2 (100.0%)	Mauls won 4 from 4 (100.0%)
    14	Turnovers conceded	17

    Defensive
    129/8	Tackles made/missed	131/16
    94.2%	Tackling success rate	89.1%

    Set pieces
    1 won, 0 lost (100.0%)	Scrums on own feed 8 won, 1 lost (88.9%)
    11 won, 1 lost (91.7%)	Lineouts on own throw 8 won, 1 lost (88.9%)

    Discipline
    10	Penalties conceded	7
    0/0	Yellow/red cards	1/0

Very similar posession figures in both games, very similar total points scored also.
Set piece is also pretty similar 12 scrums yesterday, 10 last week. Lineouts too - 23 this week, 21 last week.

Where the real differences are is in the sheer numbers of passes, kicks, runs, tackles. There were MORE clean breaks, offloads and defenders beaten in yesterdays game, but there is no comparison in the other figures:

    Tackles(missed) - 284(24) versus 187 (29)
    % tackle success: 92% versus 83%
    kicks: 38 versus 29
    passes: 372 versus 213
    runs: 256 versus 165
    metres: 901 versus 764
    rucks: 210 versus 113
    mauls: 6 versus 0

    truly a different game!

When Nick Evans is placekicking why does he not get charged down? Surely his run up starts when he takes that outrageous lunge backwards s he generally squares up to the ball for a while then lunges, then kicks. I know its somewhat similar to the likes of Sexton where he takes a few steps back then sideways but at least that is all in one motion pretty much. Evans' method suggests to me he starts when he lunges?

Run up doesn't start until you move towards the ball.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 484 ✭✭brownacid

I thought it was a movement after you square up, wasn't that the reason that Stringer could charge down O'Connor in the barbarians match at Christmas?

No its start your run up.
Going backwards is still getting set.

O Connor does this thing when he rocks forward and back and thats why Stringer charged him down.

Also only valid for conversions and not all place kicks.
