Best route to avoid Paris - Traveling from Cherbourg to Lyon

Would anyone have any good ideas on to how to avoid Paris (the Peripherique) ? We will be heading towards Paris on the A13 and I was thinking about turning off toward Versaillers, then somehow try to get on to the A6 ... but looking at the map and based previous experience it might not be that easy!

Has anyone tried this ? I would welcome any other ideas.

(We have to shoot down form Cherbourg to a town called Nitry on the A6. We have about eight hours to do it - So unfortunately taking the scenic route is not really an option. And I have done the Peripherique a few times and it just a nightmare)

    cheers

You could try www.viamichelin.com and ask it for directions going via (for example) Le Mans and Orleans.

It's not that hard to dodge the périphérique (and certainly a good idea!); see here. Just leave the A14 at Le Chesany, drive down the back of Versailles and turn right onto the A86, follow that to Anthony and voilà, you're back onto the A6. Only thing is, depending on when you're driving, these shortcuts can get nearly as congested as the périphérique — I once sat for over two hours in stopped traffic on the A86 (heading back from Lyon to Beauvais). Mind you, it was the last Saturday of July and there were 12 million Parisians on the roads...
