Thinking of reinstalling the OS, but only want to move certain programs.

My laptop is way too slow, and has loads of problems. I'm going to try to start fresh again.
So I don't want to back everything up at once.
I'd just like to know if there is any software or anything I could use/do to choose what I would like to keep without having to reinstall everything the slow way.
Like move it to a hard drive and transfer the program files back onto the laptop. Can that be done easily?

    Thanks.

http://ninite.com/ and for whatever else you use, do them individually.

Take ya longer to try and move to externals than install fresh and your machine would still be messy.

That looks great, thanks a lot. I'll just take note of the rest of the free applications I have and copy the keys of the others. Shouldn't take too long.

If I go through with reinstalling will absolutely everything on my laptop be removed completely? Like Music, photo's, video's, documents, any downloads etc... I presume it will be, so can I store files on another part of the computer or must they be on another hard drive? Probably a stupid question, since the only place I can store anything is (C:) but I thought I'd ask anyway. never know :p

    Yup

Not stupid and you can, you can create a partition (section off abit of the Harddrive) and call it D:P

What Operating System are you using? I'll find you a guide.

How big is your Harddrive and how much of it are you using?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 74 ✭✭Tranceboy 2k

The hard drive is 679 GB in total, with 180 GB free, but there is a load of useless stuff there that I wouldn't mind clearing out anyway. That's great I was disappointed at the start when I discovered there was no D drive.

I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium. Service Pack 1

    Procerssor (RAM) 6.00 GB

    64-bit OS

Thanks a lot for the help anyway :)

Will check back in the morning, bed is calling.

    Cheers.

Ahhhhhh, at those sizes I'd put the stuff you want to keep on an external and reinstall Windows on to a 70GB (example) partition using the advanced options. If the advanced options aren't available then just give it the whole Harddrive and partition it after.

Shrinking C: is an option before and after, you'd want a backup before you use it though.

You'll probably get your recovery options by continually pressing F8 on starting your Laptop, could be F2, check the Manufacturers Book.

Sorry about the massively late reply, I was kept quite busy for a while.
I actually had a re-install disk with all the factory content and it worked out perfectly (much easier than I expected) the laptop is back to the way it was the day I bought it, nothing missing, and it resolved all of the problems I was having with it too.

    Thanks for the help anyway.
