Just the trip you asked for.

I could do it return for significantly less than 80 though - what on earth do you drive? Its only ~500km return from Dublin, 80 euro = 47 litres, would imply roughly 10l/100km consumption.

I'd say that estimate isn't out of this world tbh. I would say around €60 at least.

In my case, 1.4 Petrol at 3500 RPM @ 120km/h €80 sounds about right Cork- Dublin return.

I could almost half that if I went @ 4am in the morning and did 80 the whole way:pac:

Herself is driving , so I think its a 1.5 nissan almera , we are going from Blanchardstown.

Was looking onto the Blanch bypass, then onto the M50 , then from what I see follow the signs for Limerick. From what I can see paying the three? tolls saves around two hours driving

    Sounds correct. :(
I'm up and down to Cork in a 2 litre and a 1.4 and although I can't quote stats, the 2 litre can burn through €90 on a return trip and the 1.4 can burn through €60 on a return trip easily..

Anyone have a cost comparible if we were burning diesel??

The only positive spin I can put on it is, using public transport without any early special deals it would cost €150 upwards.

Train from Dublin to Cork never cost 150E upwards. At this moment you can buy return ticket for as little as 40E. 150E is very unlikely to happen these days.

Didn't take that into account. For 1 person car is expensive, for 2 sharing the cost train becomes expensive...

I’m only going on information from my brother, he went a year or more ago and said it was €70 and something about business class, he got some special deals for €10 one way, but they were before a certain time.

I think I have the right link for prices, Adult Open Return €79.00

Oh and there's two people going

If you can plan your journey in advance, and do not expect any delays, no need to pay extra for open tickets. Loads of special tickets to buy online, 19.99/ea is going price now, so it is 80/couple. About the same as petrol in your case.

Grand stuff thanks for that, I’m a novice using the Irish rail site and couldn’t get a price.

At least I know it’s more or less the same price, but with car there’s no two buses into town with suitcases in tow and can stop etc when we feel like it

Car is definitely more convenient. Last time i went to Cork i was expecting to be drinking, so it was much better for me to leave the car and relax, first time in irish train wasn't bad too (my name was displayed over my seat!!!). Have some trauma over trains - in Poland they are terrible, IrishRail was pretty good.
If there is not much savings just drive there, i assume tolls are included in AA travel planner - there are few on your way.

We are going for three days, so finish up drinking the second night and hopefully come Monday we are fresh for the drive home.

On top of the trains, we would have to get a bus and then the Luis to the station.
As you say, if there isn’t money to be saved, go with the car.

I know there are three tolls, so I am just including them on top of what the AA cost is. I have a video account for the M50 and will have change/credit card ready for the other ones.

With 2 travelling, its a no brainer to take the car really. You could easily need a couple of taxis too if going by train and as entioned, buses & luas.
The car wins hands down for convenience and when the financials ake sense, there really is no argument for the train

Enjoy it then, it is Motors forum at the end, so train is very last option...
And you are right, if you add bus tickets, luas tickets and (i am lazy, too) carrying luggage around, car is the best option. Stops when you want etc.

At today's diesel price my 2.0l tdi costs Just under 10c per km averaged over a full tank.

Does that rate change if its a motorway trip to Cork staying on the speed limit of either 100km or 120km?

It would be much better if it was all motorway. Probably 8c a mile.
Usually i think I do about 30% of driving on motorway. And 60% other roads and 10% city.

On the motorway I rarely go slower than 110 - 120 Kph on the motorway. Normally cruise at between 2k and 2.25k revs.

I quite good at measuring my diesel consumption. I fill the tank til its spilling out and zero the trip meter. Then when I fill it again I divide the cost of the fill by the amount of Kms done. That gives me the average cost per Km for the tank. Then I work out the L/100Km. Its usually about 6.5.

Might well save the guts of an hour each way, the middle toll is fairly unavoidable anyway. It's not hard to miss the turn off for Cork to be honest if you're not watching out for it. I worked in Dublin for a few years and often missed the Cork turn :o especially if you're overtaking lots of trucks etc.

In a 1.5 Almera you're probably looking at €70 at least in fuel costs return.

I'm doing Cork - Dublin return almost every weekend these days. I always avoid the M7/M8 toll in Portlaoise pretty easily via Abbeyleix only adds about 10mins onto the journey and saves a handy €3.60 over the course of the weekend :D

According to Google Maps it's actually 2km shorter too.

Fuel wise I'd do Cork city return for about €50 - 55 in a 1.4 Ibiza depending on driving style etc.
