Dublin Airport - Spanair

I cycle around the airport a fair bit and have noticed about 9 Spanair planes parked up and a couple of other out of business airlines, Malev being one.

Anyone know why they're parked in Dublin?

Also, cycling by the Airport a couple of days ago, most of the Spanair are gone. Have they been leased out for the summer? Who owns them?

All those a/c you mention were returned to Leasor after the airline either went bankrupt (span Air and Malev) or the lease was up ( kingfisher). All get serviced by Dublin Aerospace and if a new leasee found, painted by Eirtech.

A lot of the aircraft are owned by Irish leasing companys and a lot of aircraft painting is done at DUB.

Ireland is at the forefront of aircraft leasing worldwide. You can blame our low corporation tax for that! A quick google search on aircraft leasing throws up loads of companies with headquarters in Ireland

    EDIT: Good article here.... http://www.finfacts.ie/irishfinancenews/article_1013992.shtml

why is that a bad thing?

Ireland is pretty much the centre of the aircraft leasing world thanks in part both to a favourable regulatory regime and Tony Ryan's legacy at GPA.

    Correct
If you want to register a ship in a country with 'No questions asked' regulation you would use Liberia.
Similarly If you want to register an aircraft , you'd use Ireland.
