Hi All

I heard about this initiative yesterday and surprised it hasn't been mentioned here yet. www.springboardcourses.ie has a list of 220 free courses which are aimed at jobseekers. Full list of eligiblity requirements on the website.

I'm confused. The Springboard website says that people eligible are those who are unemployed and in receipt of a welfare benefit, that's all that is mentioned.

Yet when searching undergraduate courses, all of them I've seen require the candidate to have a degree minimum?

Is this just bluebrick.ie by another name?? How is it any different?

Yeah educational requirements seem to be very similar to last year but it has been opened up to more people this year - people on home carers allowance, disability allowance etc.

Plus self-employed people could not apply last year for any course which has now changed.

This initiative has been going a couple of years now. Very few of the courses are available to people without prior qualifications unfortunately. They're really pushing the tech/computer quals though and they're all part time to enable people to continue to be 'available' for full time work.

Edit: have just had a quick glance through the new stuff and it seems pretty good. These courses have quite a high dropout rate though unfortunately as a lot of people are forced into them by the social welfare and aren't fully aware of what they're signing up for. With the amount of jobs in IT though and the likelyhood that employment is always going to be in that industry they are a great opportunity for anyone who is genuinely interested.

It appears only certain locations have courses that can be applied for through Springboard.
I have been searching the website for courses looking for a course in IT Carlow but it returns zilch so I went to an open evening last week in the IT and was told they have not received any funding. So much for the politicians spiel of upskilling and helping the unemployed get qualifications.

A new scheme is in the pipeline for autumn offering courses in similar areas, but at entry level, with no prior qualifications necessary. The areas have all been identified in the national skills strategy.
Tech, computers, pharma, social and health care, tourism etc.
