Should be interesting, although I have to say I'm a bit dismayed to see Declan Ganely for the no side instead of someone like richard Boyd Barrett, but we'll see how they do...
    EDIT: Participants:
[YES] Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore, Leader of the Labour Party, Minister for Foreign Affairs
[NO] Mary Lou McDonald, TD for Dublin Central; Vice President of SF
[NO] Declan Ganley, Business person, Chair of Libertas
[YES] Norah Casey, Owner and CEO of Harmonica, Dragon RTÉ Television - Dragons' Den

Gilmore is wrong. The French are seeking a renegotiation. The French Finance Minister said it.

with the exception of ganley (sp?) those opening speeches were woefully patronising.

Gilmore's in particular. questioning the intelligence of people who don't vote with you is not a way to win anyone's hearts and minds

i am listning to ganley, last time we were going to a vote and he was on no side, everything he said came true, this time i guess he is the only one whose word i will beleive

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭Ozymandius2011

International trade won't be effected by a no vote despite what the ICMSA man says. We will still be in the EU.

Can someone please tell me what is Nora Casey doing on this political debate. its a joke that she's on the show.

I can't stand that woman. She loves bragging about her wealth and nothing else!

    Plank strikes again

There won't be enough money to bail out everyone, that's true, but that only applies if everyone needs a bail out.

Agree with Nora Casey, it's about cheap money. Mary Lous quip about failed policy was silly, in this economy how can anyone know what's coming down the tracks in a few years time.

The ICMSA man I think made a good point, better to have a cheap line of credit and not need it than need it and not have it.

It's NOT about the CAP. PK was very insulting though and a poor moderator of the debate both with the panel and audience.

One worrying point that I didn't realise was Gilmore saying we were gone above our IMF limit.

Balance for Ganley as Michael O'Leary was not available I guess. She is poor. No one in business signs a contract before all pages have been cross checked Nora.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 337 ✭✭flatbackfour

Pat is showing his bias for the Yes side. He just can't help it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,781 ✭✭✭clappyhappy

Very poor debate, seems like they haven't done their research properly. Pat telling the farmer to get a life was very unprofessional.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 311 ✭✭hungrypig

nora casey is like a bulldog.......a very rude one

the plank was delighted with the farmers outburst, a bit of excitement in a generally boring show

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,162 ✭✭✭Ozymandius2011

The tone of this debate reminds me of that before the Nice I treaty on Q+A. Given the large DK element in the audience this augers well for a no vote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,216 ✭✭✭Happy Monday

Gilmore reminds me of one of those pigs in Animal Farm.
He was Che Guevara a couple of years back.
Now he's fat on power loved being called Tanaiste.
    Tanaiste! :D

I regret making a thread on this appalling excuse for a debate, it certainly didn't end up deserving one.
Was it a poor choice of people for the panel, or a poor job of mediating from Pat Kenny? Or a combination of both?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,066 ✭✭✭✭Happyman42

Resounding win for the No's imo. Gilmore should be locked away with Hogan:rolleyes:

The big looser was Pat Kenny. Not one of his finer hours. Usually top notch in these kind of debates. Bad day at the office Pat.

it's the rowdy pub format of the show and an audience packed with hacks cheering for their man / woman and heckling the opposition.

60 minutes waiting for a tweet or text message to throw a bit of fun in to the mix, massively disappointed.

Gilmore is Toxic these days i wouldn't believe a word from his mouth....NO side comfortable win. And for Gilmore to state that Bank debt is a seperate issue when in fact its been turned into sovereign debt due to the Guarentee shows you how some politicians think that the irish public is thick.

Was thinking that myself and she had the neck to slag ganley off for only surfacing when there's a referendum to be voted on.

The way she looks down her fat nose at people will drive people to vote no I think.

I thought watching this might help me make up my mind, still none the wiser, shambolic debate. First time in my voting life I am considering not voting.

Seemed like a win for the no's to me

Gilmore is not great at all, no passion, but to be fair, it was only him and that Nora one being heckled at.

Debate may have been okay without audience, that's what ruined it.

I imagine the days of tweets and texts on RTE Frontline have a lot in common with the days of the Celtic Tiger :D

I don't think that was comfortable for anyone, but it is two different styles of debate. The Yes side want to talk about the treaty and why wouldn't they? It makes sense.

The NO side are using it as a great platform for the protest vote and all the other anger out there, but it has very little or zero to do with the treaty. A simple question about where we get money to finance the state was avoided by Mary Lou, now you can hate FG and LAB all you want, but SF are complete charlatans as they have no clue where money will come from.

Obviously we have differeing views and tbh the No side don't know where the money will come from but i would state with certainty that if we voted 'No' Europe cannot and would not turn off the supply of money...to put it mildly it would be suicide for Irelands banking system and the ripple effects/contaigen effect on Europe would hit quite hard.

The Yes side can't answer simple questions about how much more in cuts will be needed to meet the 0.5% target or when we will have to meet it.

All they go on about is FDI into Ireland. What about our domestic economy?

FG/Labour have basically now said we're going to need a second bailout.
Their 5 year plan is working well so.
