I'm just wondering if anyone has heard that the park rangers are asking runners to leave the Polo Grounds. Apparently in the last few days, under the instructions of the OPW, a number of runners have been stopped and told they can no longer run there.

Load of rubbish if true. How can they stop people running in a particular part of the park? The guy who looks after the polo grounds is a bit of a grump, wouldn't be surprised if it was true.

Seemingly there's hassle over the polo grounds now and they are banning people from running on it. Club were approached last week and told they couldn't train there anymore.

Any particular reason given ? Could it even be for insurance purposes, i.e. runners could go over on an ankle in a horse hoof print ?

Possibly insurance you would think. It was also where a number of bootcamp groups used to meet up.

There was a group there of some type on Saturday morning when i was on my way up to help out at the 5 miler so it must be brought in for July.

Maybe its prime Polo season but i haven't heard them stop people before.

hear people were told that they would be fined for running there

I guess it is polo grounds after all, if horses showed up in santry it wouldnt go down to well either. But after what period of time does it become a right of way, people have been running there for years..

Wasn't there last week myself so don't know what reasons were cited. Though as chinguetti says I reckon it could be down to the boot camps etc who are making money from setting up there.

Problems with boot camps everywhere, not just in Phoenix Park.

Athletic clubs have been using the Polo Grounds for years without any problem until this stroke of genius. The park is afterall a public facility.
The horses are not an issue as polo is only played there on a couple of occasions a year.
I think the clubs should fight this decision and if necessary take a unite approach to fighting this decision. I don't believe there is anything in the park bye laws to prevent people from running on the Polo Grounds.
I have reason to believe that approx 40 young athletes may have used to Polo Grounds this morning ;).

And I can't see how anyone can be fined for using it either. Where do you draw the line, stop people running on the pitches?

Maybe the polo users complained about others using it? I was there a couple of weeks ago when they were setting up and overheard a discussion in which they were saying they couldn't use the full pitch towards the zoo end due to the condition of it. I put this down to being weather related as opposed to other users but only the OPW knows I suppose.
