I have a 04 2l Diesel Santa Fe. I've been told I need a new crank shaft or need to get existing one reconditioned. He couldn't give me a price there and then. Can anyone give me a rough idea as to what this is going to cost for a new part and where to purchase (might have to PM that bit). I have a friend of my brother (out of work mechanic on stand by to do it I just need to source the part for him) .
I need to get it back on the road asap.
Any help would be really appreciated.

Has this car been serviced on time all the time?

It is extremely unusual for a car, especially one of that age, to need a new crankshaft unless it has been neglected (not been serviced when it's supposed to have been service) or abused.

Is it definitely the crankshaft that needs to be done - could it be something else?

Yep unfortunately so, 2 separate mechanics have come to the same verdict on it so am going with that. I don't know the service history on it to be honest so it could easily be neglect, lack of service etc

Well a new crankshaft could easily be around the 2k mark on its own from Hyundai.

It would need to be removed and precisely checked to see if it can be re-ground with new bearings etc. It would also be foolish to open up an engine which has suffered a crank problem without giving it a full overhaul with new rings etc etc.

Either way you are talking about an expensive job to have done properly.

On my 05 the crankshaft sensor went faulty, have they eliminated that?

more economical to buy a second hand engine than replace the crank, its a massive job
