Emerald star are the probly the biggest hire company on the Shannon but there are other to check out as well such as Carrickcraft, Waveline, Shannon Castle Line and Silverline! Personally I'd go for silverline, they are family run and have the nicest fleet imo!!
There is also a guy in Killaloe who has two boats he rents out himself, one being an ex Derg Line hire boat and the other a Birchwood Ts49 (google it, tis some machine)
I don't know how he compares on price to the hire companies but I'll try dig out his number and you could give him a ring!

    Found his website!! http://raymolloy.webs.com/

That would really depend where you get the boat from and how much time you have it for!!

We have our boat in Killaloe and regularly head for Mountshannon, Dromineer, Terryglass, Garrykennedy, Portumna or even Banagher, I've yet to head further north than that though!!

For example if you were getting a boat from Carrickcraft or Silverline in Banagher, or even Emerald Star in Portumna, you could have a route something like this:

Day 1 - Banagher to Mountshannon 4hrs, 1 lock and 1 open bridge
    Day 2 - Mountshannon to Dromineer 1hr
    Day 3 - Dromineer to Terryglass 1hr40
    Day 4 - Terryglass to Banagher 2hr30 - return to base - 1 open bridge 1 lock

Lough Derg is a very exposed lake with little shelter so I'd recommend if it's very windy stay on the river. Head north and visit Shannonbridge and Ballinasloe via the River Suck!
