my freind has a 08 megane 1.4, it has 91,000 on the clock and he was told the belt should be done around 80,000 ? any how he was quoted €540 off Renault with the water pump. would this be about right or would an indy be a bit cheaper?? any advice would be handy, he`s just looking for a ball park figure. thanks!!

Get it done in the dealership if you want a cleaner looking service history. It would stand to do that as any mistakes would be covered under the warranty.

Having said that, 540 sounds alright for a job like that from the dealership. It would be worthwhile on such a young car to get it done in a dealership as it will be peace of mind on a car that still has some value to it. Once the next timing belt change comes around, then go indy, would be my advice.

I disagree pretty much completely with the above post. I don't see any point in paying extra to have a main dealer do this job rather than an independent.

€350-400 should cover the cost of the job in a good independent garage.

thanks for the replies folks , i`ll pass it on i don`t think he`s worried about a clean looking history at the moment and like George says, a good indy would do just as good a job in my opinion also, thanks.

You still have a service history and a warranty on any work in a reputable indy garage.

I got the timing belt done on my Integra for €270 without the water pump (which Im told is about €50). That was at an indy garage. €540 sounds high.

Id go to a good indy personally, but I know of someone who had a timing belt changed at a ford main dealer that snapped within a year , and the garage put a brand new engine in. So you pays your money...

But, of course, that would be far from the norm from a main dealer, especially after a year.

IMO a timing belt kit and water pump change on a 1.4 megane, using the correct engine specific tools, should cost less then €400.
