    Hey there.

I'm looking for about an 18 X 1 meter roll of cheap thick black fabric/cloth.

I'm want to use it to create a small dark enclosure to stop light from coming in, it's a project I'm pursuing (don't ask).

Anyway, I'm looking for something as cheap as possibile and nothing fancy, I won't be keeping it when I'm finished with it.

Can someone advise me on any shops and what the prices might be for the amount of material I'm looking for (about 18 X 1 meters). I'm in the Dublin area.

You might find it easier to get thickness in some other colour than black, then put a layer of whatever thin black you can find inside it. Which is of course going to make it a bit more expensive, but it might be a solution if you can't get thick black fabric. This crowd http://murphysheehy.com/ used be the best bet, but they have gone a bit posh and might not be that cheap. Michael Guineys in Waterford have good cheap fabric, don't know if they do fabric in the Dublin shop.

Let me guess :D you are a student creating a 'dark room' to show an end of year film project in? Does it have to be fabric? If you were to look around a couple of electrical shops and see if you can get a couple of those giant fridge packing boxes you could make a structure out of cardboard and paint it with emulsion. Flat screen tvs (big ones) have good strong cardboard too and could be used for assembling a hide.

You could also hunt in charity shops for thick velvet curtains - that would be the best fabric and it would not necessarily have to be black, it would be very dark inside. Put them lining side out and they would look fairly tidy too.

Sorry if I am jumping to conclusions, hope you find some.

Realistically, if this is blocking out light, then you want a heavy wool or velvet- neither of which will be cheap regardless of she you go. Most other fabrics won't be able to fully block out light.

I don't think I've seen either wool or velvet recently for less than 15 euros a meter and it's usually closer to or over 20.

Your other option, as suggested, is layering. In which case you could batting or felt and cover it with a cheap black material. I'm not sure though that this will end up much cheaper than the al thing.

Alternatively, if you can find old curtains, they might be a cheaper option. It depends on how vital it is that all light not come in.

    hi,

TWI in Mountjoy Square is your best bet. Lots of choice at resonable price. Tell them what you are using it for and they will sort you out.
