Paying a bill

    Hi,

Not sure if this is the right place to post this but have seen similar kinds of questions here.

I work in a hotel and a few weeks ago a couple walked out without paying their food bill. The barman was on with a new member of staff who wasn't really keeping on top of things as she didn't really know the ropes.

There are 5 lounges in the bar 3 of which are regularly in use, once you get called into one there's no way of knowing what's going on in the others. We also have to go into a kitchen for tea/coffee and a different kitchen to collect food orders-impossible to watch everywhere at once.

He's now being asked to pay the full price for the bill which is 60euro. I'm just wondering if the hotel has the right to do this? The bar was completely understaffed and way too busy for one bar man and a new member of staff to keep an eye on all the lounges. Surely if he does have to pay the cost should just be whatever the stock not paid for cost the hotel, not the menu prices of the food? I can't find any employees rights documents with this type of information so if anyone could point me in the right direction it'd be great.

Unless his contract specifically allows for it (which would be a stupid contract to sign), it would be illegal for his employed to deduct the money from his wages. They can ask all they want but there's nothing compelling him to pay it.

Edit: This page and this one have more information.
