I've mixed feelings myself. Never want to lose, especially to Roscommon, but I think that ultimately this young Galway team would benefit more from going early into the back door and getting more games than they would from say, winning Connacht, getting to an All-Ireland quarter final and getting bet. We need to beat some teams from outside Connacht to get this Louth 2004 and the one point defeat thing off our backs.

I think Roscommon will win a tight match tomorrow as it happens.

I get a feeling this could be a draw, but at home I personally find it hard to see a Galway win unfortunately. If Bergin was to dominate midfield though over Mannion and Finneran though it will be a Galway win. Bergin was unplayable when he hit his rare stride in the League alongside Higgins.

As you know yourself though the Championship is an entirely different animal.
A draw would do no harm at all to to however would go to win it.

Years ago this would be a straight forward win for Galway but Roscommon are able to give most a game nowadays however the way the fade out of games has to be a concern. Last 15mins when both have empty the bench will be the telling factor in this game & i think Mullholland will outsmart Des Newton.

Should be good game the winner will fancy their chances to win Connacht & no reason why the loser can't have a decent run in the qualifiers.

I have to say I fancy Roscommon. They have a much smaller pool of players to choose from but they play much more like a team than Galway. Added to the fact that Roscommon love playing as the underdogs & galway usually struggle under expectation to win. I will definitely be taking Paddys Powers odds of 2/1 on them.

Roscommon to win by 2 or more points.

Looking forward to 4pm and putting the feet up to watch the start of the championship- on tv- should be a close enough affair, Roscommon for me....by 3 or 4 points.

Anybody who knows the history of this fixture would know that it's never been a "straight forward win for Galway"!

Sometimes it was straightforward (in more recent years (02-08)) but Galway had some of the greatest ding dong battles during the period 98-01. Plenty of times before that too.

Plenty of times it's been a straight forward win for Roscommon. This is probably the rarest fixture in the Connacht SFC and in my memory it's 50/50 between the two teams.

Well your memory is wrong. The tally is comfortably in Galways favour and Roscommon have beaten Galway once in 22 years

The Sunday Game title music is very tame now compared to what it used to be a few years ago.

They should have left it alone.

I love that people are using ancient history as if it will make a difference. I heard Kerry hurlers look a good prospect this year based off the back of their recent 1891 success.

RTE panel went Galway. I thought Rossies would be favourites for this.

Kilbride is really a classy score-taker.

    Roscommon's backs are pathetic.

should have been a penalty....and the roscommon defender should have at a yellow card...unsure if he received one.

Jesus Ros are dire in every department here.

Galway are treating this like a training session.

You can blame the god awful bumpy pitch for Finneran's injury aswell

Jesus, first game of the championship and Roscommon look like rabbits in headlights.

I thought Galway would scrape a win here and really wasn't expecting such a mismatch.

Not much good to either team really.

its been the case at senior level for many a year now, when faced with Galway or Mayo anyways.

great direct, foot-passing traditional galway style football.

    good to see :)

They're not, they're just an awful team. So unbelievably overrated by their own supporters but eventually people get so used to hearing how amazing all these division three players are that they start to think they must be good. They're not.

Roscommon's defence is poor, Conroy is playing brilliantly.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 15,238 ✭✭✭✭Diabhal Beag

Roscommon are no way near that poor. Galway have been superb especially Conroy Sice and Bradshaw. Bergin is dominating midfield too.

Donie is absolutely ****ting a brick out there. Woeful so far but still almost snatched a goal.

Rossies made it far too easy for Galway there - no intensity or hunger whatsoever.

The marking was shockingly bad by Roscommon giving Galway acres of time and space.

Roscommon lucky to be 8 points down at HT.

The fact that Roscommon were so bad and with Shine off-form and yet still the attack managed 6 points would have me concerned about the Galway defence if I was a Galway supporter for the longer term.

there are not many intelligent footballers in the county, even some of the best minors are just physical specimens, good attitude and physical gifts rather than born footballers and will be flumoxed by intelligent runners at senior level more often than not.

Roscommon fans are usually so absorbed by players in their own county that they actually fail to grasp that things are actually developing with other counties. Theres a presumption that underage success will result in senior success aswell, if it results in senior provincial success then they will be doing very very well.

On a going day, Bergin is one of the best midfielders in the country. Took the foot off the gas a bit, need to press on now and finish this off

that's a bit of a contradiction. How could they be that bad then?

They scored 6, Shine has missed a few frees and had a goal chance.

They're doing great work at underage level and I expect that to translate to an improvement in the next couple of years when a few more players come through to support the couple of decent guys they already have, but the current team are straight up poor.

Underage success doesn't guarantee overage success. Just look at Galway in both codes.

What a player to bring on.

    Galway's Ryan Giggs !

    My point wasnt exactly clear.

It was more the fact that Roscommon managed to score 6 points, with Shine missing a few frees while playing very badly.

Basically I'd be concerned about the Galway defence for when they met any sort of a team playing well.

I got your point, just thought they couldn't have been that bad when you consider they could have had 10+ points in the first half. It wasn't like they had 3 attacks and scored two goals!

Whatever about that, barring a 5 minute spell in the second half, they've been very poor. Galway are looking good.

Galway generally look good when they have time and space to play football.
However I wouldn't get carried away just yet.

Great stuff by Meehan there for the goal. Top quality awareness around the small square.

Yeah, I thought that just after I posted it. :o

Still, I'm a Liverpool fan myself but I do have a lot of respect for Giggs as a player. I reckon most ABUs probably do.

Galway are being made to look good here, 3-11 from play is a great tally but I'd be concerned how we will fare when we come up against some real opposititon.

Nice to see Meehan playing well again. You don't lose class. Joyce is some sub to be able to bring on.
