Trek wheel upgrade

I am thinking of upgrading my wheels. I own a 2009 trek 1.5. I started back summer cycling again but finding that my mates higher end bikes roll a lot faster and longer. I,m the lightest of the bunch but still going downhill they freewheel a lot quicker

I was thinking of getting a new set of fulcrum racing 5 wheels for €200. Are they worth it and will I notice a difference. I suppose I'm asking is it worth it.

Heavier riders will always freewheel faster than lighter riders, you cant upgrade gravity ;) and besides why are you freewheeling anyway?? keep those legs going!!:D

Seriously though, I would never try to talk anyone out of an upgrade. Mavic Aksiums are the usual wheel upgrade at that price level. I have just put an order into Planet X for a set of Shimano RS80 wheels, a bit dearer though at €403 delivered.

I have never used Fulcrum but I believe they have a good rep.

A friend of mine has a new Trek 1.5 and when he's freewheeling downhill, I have to keep a finger on the brake or risk going into the back of him.

Surely it would be the tyres holding you back and not the rims ?

Whats the usual upgrade from Mavic Aksiums?

fulcrum 3, aero wheels (seem to heavier...)?

ksyriums maybe? Not sure, but they seem to be more expensive at least.

i can get a new set of Aksiums really cheap but i was reading that its not much of an upgrade on the Trek approved wheels.

What sort of tires do people recommend?

I changed my tyres to Continental GP4000s recently and so far find them good. I also bought Conti Ultra light tubes. The tyres weigh about 200g and the tubes weigh about 45g so I ended up loosing about 150g per wheel for an outlay of less than €85. Bike24.de have Conti GP4000s tyres for €28.50 each (plus €10 delivery) they are also the cheapest I could find for the tubes.
