I've had cold start issues and a bouncy idle when warm since I bought the van. Checked the timing on vag-com last night. Its hovering over on the lower 40 line so the timing is retarded. It's jumping in and out of what the ECU can compensate for. Any tips on adjusting it forward a tiny bit. It's an Mk4 VW transporter TDI.

    Is it a 1.9 or a 2.5?

    2.5

The 2.5 is more difficult to adjust than the 1.9 unfortunately. The correct way to do it is to loosen the sprocket on the injector pump end of the camshaft but I wouldn't recommend that unless you are well used to doing timing belt jobs.

You can get a small amount of advance on it by adjusting the position of the idler pulley on the pump belt. This is easier to do than the other way, but you still need to have a good understanding of setting tension on timing belts etc. Is this something you would be confident doing?

I'm going to be changing the cam belt on thursday as its long overdue. I'd rather not be doing it but don't have any money at the moment. Can't afford the pump belt even. Confident of not breaking anything but not sure how good a job I'll do yet. Probably take me the whole day. I have a good workshop manual but it uses a guage for the timing adjustments instead of vagcom.

I think I'll just use the cam sprocket to adjust it then.

Not really sure about using the idler pulley method. As in how much will it be changing the tension if I bring the timing up to 55. I think it might be only for the tiniest adjustments. Maybe enough to get within the ECU tolerance but not bang on.
