hey guys just lookin for your thoughts on this. The red light for the petrol came on so put a tenner in it and reset the clock cos wanted to see how far/long i would get for my tenner. Well just clocked up under 50k for the ten quid when the red light came on again. Its been all city driving no long distances. Living in waterford and drive 1.4 astra. My boot is empty as in only the spare tire in it so not luggin around heavy loads.

Am I gettin value for my ten quid?
If not what am i doin wrong driving wise in the car?
Is there something wrong with my car?
Am i goin mad and all this is perfectly normal????haha:pac:

See that reads as 50 k ( thousand) and not 50km to me.
Took me a while to work it out...hahaha

    Sounds bad to me...

Once on my way back from Donemana, I put a tenners petrol in the van to see how far it would bring me till the red light came on again. I got around 70 miles or about 110kms in my van with a passenger, loose tools and several components in the back for another van :)

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

That's the least scientific method of fuel consumption calculation ever :D

As above, the fuel light can come on at completely different times. If you drive up a hill you could cause the fuel light to come on a lot earlier then if you stayed on the flat.

I've often parked my astra on a hill and could start it up and the fuel light would be flashing, then after a few KM's its gone off again.

The only way to accuratly see how much you are getting for your money is to fill the tank.....drive, say 100kms, then fill again and see how much it takes to fill.

so am i just basically better off just filling the tank drive til red light then fill it all the way up again to be gettin value for money in the long run?

No no, you could brim it. Reset your clock, drive 100km, or 40/50/60/70, whatever. And brim the tank again. See how many litres you put in, and that will tell you exactly how much petrol you've gone through.

I once gave a lift to a friend from Naas to Dublin airport. Before trip computer shown range of 100miles, it was 90 when i came back. I drove throug the town only for few days before that journey...
Since then i stopped resetting trip computer, the more miles you drive the more accurate it gets.

Was expecting to get nice car for a tenner, too.
But would have to put another tenner to keep it running, and then another one... Don't want it anymore.

Roughly 12 l/100km. Not great, but within the range of what I would expect for city driving. Pretty terrible way to calculate it as discussed above.

No no no, forget the red light, fill the tank and then check mpg when the tank is 5/16 full.
Read your car manual to check how big the fuel tank is and then you can work out how many litres fuel you used in the 11/16s...
Then walk back along the route you took with a trundle wheel to work out how many miles/kilometers you drove.
Once you have the volume of fuel and distance travelled you should have no problem working out the mpg or kpg...
