Getting a refund from Racing UK

I bought my husband an annual subscription for Racing Uk in March 2011. It was something I could not repeat in 2012 so I gave notice on 29 February that I would not be renewing my subscription as is their policy.

An amount of €300 was taken from my Credit Card on 12 March, despite my giving notice and when I realised I phoned the company and asked for a refund. They would not give me a refund on my credit card and said they issued a cheque on 17 March which I did not receive. Apparently, on this occasion they ran their billing run before they ran their cancellation run.

Several phone calls later and I was finally issued with a cheque. In the meantime, my credit card company had charged me €7.42 in interest as I did not pay this €300 in time. (I keep my card at zero balance, infact this particular time I had an .80c credit) and when I went to lodge the cheque my bank charged me €9 as the cheque was issued from a UK bank.

Small amounts I know, but being unemployed, these little amounts add up, not to mention the costs of telephone calls to get my €300 back.

Any advice on how to get this money back, plus the €9 I will be charged if they issued me with another cheque?

    Many thanks....
