Should alcohol sponsorship of sports be banned?

The latest idea from Minister Shorthall is that alcohol sponsorhip of sports should be banned (http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2012/0517/1224316240917.html)

Personally I feel without such sponsorship certain sports competitions will suffer. There are very few oprganisations out there that are in a position to sponsor high profile sports events and I sincerely doubt that the Heniken Cup or the Guinness Hurling Series being called such contributes to the mis-use of alcohol by our young people.

Am I being too naive in this or is Minister Shortall taking her stance against alcohol and the promotion of alcohol just a step too far?

I agree with you, sports need the money that alcohol sponsorship brings in.

I seriously doubt that it actually makes people drink more. NO one decides they're going to have Heineken instead of 7up because of the Heineken cup!

That's not how advertising works. If that were true, why would those companies bother spending millions on such sponsoring in the first place?

Because people will drink their alcohol drinks instead of someone elses. That doesn't mean people will drink alcohol instead of soft drinks though!

here we go another stance for political correctness:rolleyes:

its people like this trying to turn this country into a nanny state, its getting beyond a joke at this stage. ill be the first to admit to the problems caused by drink in this country, but thats down to individual personalities etc. you cant really blame an advertising campaign or even drinks company for that. advertise away and good luck to them........ she'll want to stop car companies advertising next because of road deaths!

-no offence to any families of victims of road deaths-

I completely agree. They must think that we are complete fools. People drink at sporting events because they want to. Nothing to do with advertising/sponsorship
