MC means its old shape. No bad thing.

Listen for rattly chain or noisy water pump,

To be honest I'd go for a run-out strata model which has nice spec and makes the car much more pleasant.

With a small car, check the clutch and look for accident repairs..

There is a sticky on the motors forum on what to look for when buying a used car.

    Any link to the ad?

Gearbox (and Diff) gave trouble on some of these.
Listen for a whine while driving that disappears if you press the clutch.

what does the whine mean a bearing?

Could the OP be talking about the MM transmision version? As the Mk1 was sold until early 2006 I would have assumed MC would refer to the old models registered in early 2006.

Handbrake is a weak spot, saggy cables are to blame.

A fair few have been stuffed and repaired, look out for that!

unlikely. The mc covers facelift models from 03 up to end of production.

It's on the reg cert so some sellers will put it on the ad without knowing what it means.
