Like can you just attach it and take it off the ball hitch as you please or does it require permanent attachment?

I got one from chain reaction.
It's for 1-2 bikes but was fairly cheap (£60 I think).

It has a scissors action to clamp on the tow ball with a pin to lock in place. Is fitted and removed is seconds and "farily secure"..

Another source is www.roofbox.co.uk. They have a decent range of racks. I bought an Atera Strada DL3 from them recently. I opted for that one because not only can it hold 3 bikes but it also slides away from the car to give you access to the boot. Atera claim that the sliding mechanism, and shape of their rack, provides better access to the boot than racks which tilt. I've not used it yet, nor have I used a tilting rack to compare against, but reviews of it generally are very positive. It's certainly not cheap though. Shipping was £14 from RoofBox. Their website also has a section where they sell returned products at reduced prices so might be worth checking for a possible bargain (they seem good at giving detailed descriptions of what state such products are in, which is a good sign that they are honest about what you are buying).

When I was pricing getting a towbar fitted to my car, Malcolms' in Rathmines quoted me about 260euro (incl. VAT) for a Witter ZX300 rack (also takes 3 bikes) if I was also getting them to fit the towbar. I only briefly looked at the spec of that rack but it seemed decent enough. I believe they also sell the 2-bike version. I don't know how that price compares against other sources of the same rack but they may be another option to consider and they keep them in stock too so you can go and have a look at one in the flesh.

I got this 2 bike version from Wiggle. Takes about 10 secs to take on and off. Brilliant, highly recommend it. It's very secure. I've had two bikes on it, doing 100+ km (in a 120km zone) on the motorway, no problems.

I second the above post. It folds up small and I leave it in the boot most of the time, takes up no space really.

This is the three bike version I have. Linky is to Wiggle but I actually bought mine off Amazon. Great bit of kit - easy to mount/dismount and folds up nicely to fit into the boot when your out enjoying the trails. Three bikes do fit but it can be a bit of a squeeze when one of them is a Trek Women's Cruiser!

Thule stuff is top notch - you won't be disappointed if you buy their kit...

Can anyone recommend a good trunk mount bike rack to fit an A3? Roof and hitch mounts are not an option unfortunately.

I went onto the thule website and they have a tool to pick the right one for your car, the thule racks are excellent i have been using a 3 bike one on a hatchback focus for a year now no issue still perfect.
