So recently i got a 4GB Micro SD card for my phone which had a 1GB card in it. the 4GB card was used but i dont know for how long. Anyway, i have a usb card reader so I plugged it into my computer and was able to see that there wasn't much on the card. i removed all of it (it had also been used in a phone so it was only a few pics and videos) and then removed it from my computer.

I input my 1gb card into the computer and Cut all the files on that to my machine. I removed the 1gb and put the 4gb back in. I opened the card on the computer and started copying the files across. after about 5 minutes it froze and asked me to insert a disc into the drive. i plugged it out and back in again a few times and then decided to format it. The formatting froze my computer and so i restarted which didnt do anything as it then decided that the SC card was a disc drive and wanted me to put a disc into it.

At this stage i decided to put all the stuff back onto the 1GB card but that came up with the same message. i gave up for the night and brought it into work. on the work computer i can format and have formatted the 1GB card. this now works fine. the 4GB card will not format as it keeps asking to input a disc into the drive. If i put it into the phone it works fine and i can take pictures and save them to it but they dont show when i put it into the computer. i even tried formatting it through cmd prompt but got nowhere.

Any help with sorting this out would be great.

TL;DR need advice on how to format a micro SD card that half works.

If your phone recognises it OK, can you connect phone to PC by USB cable, when it should show up as an external drive.

Never even thought of that even though i'm sitting here with the cable beside me.

Tried it and it worked. Thanks!

It looks like you have a fake card, when you originally put it into the computer it will show 4gb but when you try to put anything more than 500mb on the card it will fail. These cards are flashed with custom FW to show fake capacities.
If you bought this from a store, bring it back but you say there were items already on this card so I will assume you bought it second hand.
Find out where the card was bought and if it was bought from an online store cheaply or ebay then more than likely it is a fake and will not work to the full capacity and the fact that you tried to format it may have corrupt the custome FW.
