Adventure races like Galeforce West or that one around Dublin (DARE?) seem to often replace the swimming with kayaking, although they do throw in other random stuff too!

Is the Gael Force not off road though for some of it or even all of it?

Not the cycling element, most of the running is though. However there's some very rough roads/tracks involved on the cycling stages. Most similar events will have the running as being off road.

I would strongly suggest visiting this forum:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/forumdisplay.php?f=1527

Triathlon/Duathlon/Adventure Racing. As helpful as the cyclists here are...sometimes they're...well not that helpful :D

(Where 'multi' sports or whatever they are called are concerned!).

Edit: I'll take that back after reading some of the replies!

Celbridge Paddlers Canoe Club was running a winter series of them, but it was scheduled to finish in April:

    very philosophical there paky.
I often find myslf wondering what is the point of it all, especially on some of those strava segments..
It is truly fantastic that we live in a time and place where such a thing as a kayakathon is not only possible but some kayak club runs a race series of them.
pointless my hole..it's all good, competition will thrive anywhere it seems.

I love to hear about all the quirky niche sport races to be had. The swimmers have an open water race series in the harbours, rules include no wetsuits and they have a mad handicapping system that generally means the best swimmer cannot win.

    Peter, stop reading now ;)....

My pet bugbear.... Gael Force, WAR, and all the copycat races that have spewed up accross the country are not Adventure Races. A simple test would be if you can't answer the question "Who is/was the navigator on your team" then its not an adventure race, by definition. Adventure races have navigation at their core, are primarily team based, and have mountain biking rather than road biking. It sounds like some of these races pretty perfectly fit the definition of a kayakathon though, as it happens. So there are tons of the things happening in Ireland! They're known as multisports races in New Zealand (They know what an AR is down there), where the grand-daddy of them all, the Coast to Coast, is hotly contested every year.

(there are a a few good adventure races too, such as the Beast of Ballyhoura, the TEAR, the CCAR series etc, as well)
