Investigating S-OFF methods for the One X with a few people on XDA, we made a fairly interesting discovery.

There are special adb reboot codes you can use to reboot a phone in to different modes.

    HBOOT:
    adb wait-for-device shell reboot oem-42

    Turns phone off:

    adb wait-for-device shell reboot oem-74

    Factory Reset:
    adb wait-for-device shell reboot oem-76

    RUU Mode:
    adb wait-for-device shell reboot oem-78

A new "special fastboot" mode (I've never seen this before):
    adb wait-for-device shell reboot oem-34

Could anyone with a HTC Device try out the OEM34 reboot command and see if it gets them the same thing? My Desire is currently out for repair so I only have the One X to test with.

Well me and a group of other people discovered it on XDA... so naturally enough yes. It's not a root method. None of us know what it is. We're suspecting it may be some form of service mode which may be helpful in getting S-OFF.
