Hi. I have ordered a free to view card under the BAI sound and vision scheme. Does anyone know what channels i can expect to get or know of a website that will list the channels.
    Thanks

Send an email to setanta requesting a FTV card under the B.A.I. scheme and tell them you already have a set top box and dish. They will send you a card free of charge.

Yes you get the FTA channels without any card ...... the card is for a few FTV channels which are encrypted.

No, you'll need a Sky Digibox.
(The Digibox doesn't know its nationality. That's determined by the viewing card.)

RTE, TV3 and TG4 are not FTV - just incase the OP isn't aware. You need a Sky sub to watch these on the Sky Platform.

Does the card need to be paired?

[I don't know the implication of 'paired'] Should have said --- I am unsure what you mean by 'paired' ........ but it does need to be activated, in my case by Setanta.

My card was enabled in an old Pace Sky box, and has been used since in an Ariva 120 combi box.

It's not really a FTV card either. Setanta is pay TV channel. It's a taster to get you to subscribe. Shame on BAI for being conned into giving Setanta Licence Fee payments for a PayTV channel on a Proprietary Pay TV platform.

Viva and Motors used to be FTA. It would be interesting to know why the Sony channels, Motors TV and Viva work with a card intended as a hook to get you to subscribe to Setanta.

FTV applies really only to Terrestrial channels that are on a Wide Beam Satellite and thus have a Card Scheme. This used to be the case with BBC and still is in Netherlands, Switzerland and France.

A card supplied by a pay TV channel to get "free tasters" on that Pay TV channel isn't a FTV card.

Paired means when Activated it only works in one box. Applies to "Premium" Pay TV channels. Thus a Sky card with Sky Sports the Skysports won't work in another box but Sky1 likely will.

Activated means the card is unlocked for one or more encrypted channels. It may or may not work in other boxes, or work just for some channels in other boxes.

Well the card does make available some channels that are encrypted so it behaves, from the user point of view, as a FTV card.

There appear to be a number of decisions by the BAI that are questionable.

Please don't rock that boat :D

As it does make available other channels not available FTA, then FTV seems to be the best available term.

I edited my previous post to clarify what I meant.

I can think of no better name for the card than FTV ... or maybe "Setanta FTV+" to denote the extra channels made available :D

Viva and its former incarnation TMF has never been FTA on satellite. At least their UK/RoI versions.
TMF was a Freeview exclusive for several months before it became part of Sky's line up. When the name of the station was changed to Viva it then became a FTV channel.

probably then I'm thinking of Viva on 13E or 19E, possibly even analogue?

It's a "promotional" card for a Pay TV channel. Setanta, (not Sky, Sony, Motors or Viva) are issuing and it doesn't give all of Setanta free.

It's totally misleading to call it a FTV card. It's purely designed to sell Setanta's service.

It only needs activation for the LFC/Sony channels.

Do NOT activate if you want to keep the UK EPG on a sky box (i.e. for the card trick or if you no longer have a Sky sub and have a HD box)

You're probably thinking of the original Viva channel coming from Germany.

If you get a UK FTV card then yes you get all the FTA channels too.

The Setanta FTV card (when activated) does not give you ALL the FTA channels only a few of the BBC's.

I got this card and could get no additional FTV channels as discussed here. I placed card in SKY HD box and contacted Setanta via e-mail to activate. Got a nice call from (I assume SKY call centre) advising the card only for use under BAI programmes and will not clear any other channels or programmes. I menioned that I had been getting Free View : Golf Central on Setanta but was specifically told the card only for use under BAI programmes and will not clear any other channels or programmes.

On plus side it did activate most but not all UK channels stored under other channels when I added RoI subscription card back into SKY box

Two quick questions, lads. Who sends the (Sound and Vision) card out, Sky or Setanta - and is it a standard white card?

    Cheers. :)

    Sky,
    Yes.

Sent e-mail to Setanta and card arrived within two days. Rang customer services and card activated there and then in old Sky box then transfered to free to air combo box so now have Sony channels. Probably have to insert it into the Sky box every so often to keep it working.

Will this card work only in Ireland and does anyone have the Setanta email address?

    Thanks!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 58 ✭✭Fredd

Should work anywhere but they probably will only post it out to an Irish address (card arrives from Sky) I contacted them on customerservicesire@setanta.com

Nope.. a blue card first off is now outdated (replaced by white ones about a year or so ago) so it's unlikely it'll work for anything except FTA (completely free) channels at this stage - I stand to be corrected on this

As for sky+ recording, regardless of what card you have you'll need a current active sky subscription for that. Also be aware that if you later cancelled, all your recordings would be inaccessible unless you resubscribed to the same channels

I am just a little confused about these cards and their relationship to the Sky (subscription) platform.

I take it that under the terms of the Sound and Vision Scheme, the applicable Setanta programming will have to be made viewable on any receiver, but what about the additional Sony channels being mentioned - will they be available on a non Sky receiver?

Does activation of the additional channels (non Setanta) require initial use of a Sky box?

Yes the Sony channels and a couple of others are available using the Sky card issued through Setanta on other receivers ..... I have the channels here using such a card in an Ariva 120 STB.

I activated the card in an old Sky box (very old) and then moved it to the Ariva ..... so have no idea if it could have been activated while in the Ariva.

No idea .... if it works for all the channels then I guess not :D

Setanta informed me at the time that they had to activate it, so I rang them with it in the Sky box to be sure.

Dont ring, just request that you want a card under the BAI scheme. Confirm that you have all the equipment and understand it is only to access programmes viewable under the BAI scheme. They should send you out one then.

I applied for what Setanta call their 'FTA' card, by email yesterday.

I received a reply explaining the BAI scheme restriction (only used for Sound and Vision funded progs) and stressing that it won't decode their standard sports coverage programmes - all fair enough.

They did however state that I would have to call their customer service dept to progress the application. I was reluctant to do so since I avoid calling special rate numbers whenever I can and anyway I didn't understand why I would receive an email from customer service instructing that I then call the same department.

I replied simply saying that I wished to progress my application and asked them to clarify what information they required in addition to what I had already provided in my application (request for card under the named scheme, my name and address). This morning I have received a reply to say the card has been ordered and to call them on receipt for activation.

The question of card activation still applies in my case. I am using a non sky box (edision mini ip) - can the card be 'activated' in this box? If not, I can get access to a sky box, but would be concerned that programmes financed via a funding scheme that I contribute to through my TV licence payment may only be availed of in this instance through a commercially restricted platform.

Unless anyone here knows for sure, I'll try the card in my Edision when it arrives and see what happens.
