Why do we need a treaty?

    I read the handout by the referendum commission.
    Why do we need a referendum or even treaty to tell governments how to manage their money properly?
    Why all this money spent on a referendum for a bit accountancy?
    All Enda Kenny has to do is sign a bit of paper in Brussels saying the Irish government will abide by the rules and then bish bash bosh - job done and lots of money that would have been spent on a referendum put to better use.

    Not knowing a whole pile..it seems the government are being transparent in letting the country vote on it.

    Thats good in my eyes.

    Not saying what my vote will be :cool:

    The government is in a tricky position. If they just ratify it which some commentators believe was legally possible there would be a lot of blow-back from the no side and probably court challenges. A referendum is more expensive but will probably work out best.


    I can't help but notice that people who were screaming for a referendum have now moved the goalposts and are now saying the whole thing is pointless because of Greece and France. And I get the feeling the goalposts can be moved again if necessary.

    To answer the OP's question honestly unlike some of the answers offered.

    We need a referrendum because the AG of the country decided we needed one to make this amendment to our consitution legal.

    Essentially yes. Although I feel there was a certain degree of fence sitting by the AG. Scofflaw said in this thread :

    "Well, no, it is about the budget limitations. Even though we've agreed them in an EU context, the fact that we're agreeing them in a different context means they require a referendum just as much as they would had we never agreed those same limits with the EU."

    The "agreed them in an EU context" refers to Maastricht. HTH!
