Tiguan v Sportage v SUV/MPV???

    Hey

Looking for an SUV, been going around a lot of places looking and this seems to be the best.

So looking at the Tiguan Trend and Fun with Bluetooth and cruise control as extra's.

On the Kia looking at the Sportage EX, no extra's required.

The Sportage is a bit cheaper. It is over 4 year contract but looking for opinions.

I have also looking at Mazda CX-5 which looks great, decent price with a good few extra's but you can't get hold of any them in the country so rule it out over that.

Other ones I have ruled out: Qashqai, A160. The Hyundai ix35 has too high a depreciation.

I can't seem to find anything else decent in the 26-32k range. So any other idea's would be great.

From a looks point of view I think the Tiguan/CX-5 are the best looking. But also like the look of Sportage.

The Kia Sportage and Hyundai ix35 are the same vehicle as Hyundai and Kia are sister companies. I cannot imagine the depreciation been that different on either vehicles to be honest.

I would rule the Tiguan out simply because it cannot match the Hyundai or Kia for spec and only has a miserable 2 year warranty. Skoda Yeti is a cheaper Tiguan but again only comes with a 2 year warranty which is just not good enough these days. Have a look at the Toyota Rav4 and there is a new Ford Kuga out soon but have no idea on the release date.

But to be honest it is hard to beat the Sportage for price, equipment and 7 year warranty.

I bought a similar type car a few months back. Test drove most of the ones you mentioned above.

The best of the lot that i tired was the ford kuga. The looks are decent, the spec isn't bad on the cheapest one, think they were looking for about 30k for a zetec spec. Think they come with 3 year warrenty

If you could stretch to 34k then definitely look at the titanium spec one.

The kuga is a far better put together motor than the tiguan and is a bit bigger than the Hyundai/kia. It also has a 2l diesel engine which i think you need to lug around that the weight of these types of cars.

I didn't end up buying the Kuga and went for a bmw x1 instead but that mite be slightly outside your price range at 36k

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,613 ✭✭✭Big Nelly

    Hi Guys

Yes I forgot to mention the Kuga is too high on CO2 count, need something under the 140 barrier. From the website I see the lowest Kuga is 157. I had thought of the Kuga but this ruled it out........

The RAV4 is expensive and CO2 high again

In regards to the ix35 and the Sportage I would have expected the same. But it is off a company and the depreciation is alot higher for the ix35 than the Sportage...strange one i admit

    Don't dismiss the Yeti.

Frankly its better than anything listed above and offers far better value than anything VW offer.

Its beauty rivals that of the Fiat Multipla.

There are thousands of them on the roads too...not. Must be a reason for that.

Pitiful boot, the Octavia scout was a more practical car IMO.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 357 ✭✭cozzie55

Considering emissions then the only other motor i can think of that mite suit is a Peugeot 3008. I test drove one of these aswell. It wasn't a bad place to sit, was solidly built by comparison to pervious Peugeots. the 1.6 diesel isn't bad, but I found i found it a bit underpowered. Co2 is 135 so under your 140 limit. Prices are also well within your price range with the basic spec starting at 24k and the top of the range one 30k

There's always a more practical alternative if you look at cars, but OP wants an SUV.

Just had call from garage, seemingly the Mazda CX5 are available in June. anyone know much about them? The engine seems very good and economical....also they look very good

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,892 ✭✭✭spank_inferno

Granted, its not the most handsome, however when picking we looked at the Sportage, the IX-35 & the Qushqai.

And aside from the aesthetic (I think it looks fine!) pound for pound none of the above could match the yeti for versatility, ease of use, quality & all round value.

    These people agreed apparently

Car of the year awards are a joke in most situations. Fiat's used to get them every year for ages for crap cars!!

The rubbish 2 year warranty on the Yeti would put me off it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16 L and K

I saw on website that Skoda have just launched a new model called the Urban with a full glass roof and some really nice looking wheels. Spoke to a dealer about Warranty and he said that he is expecting an announcement regarding a longer warranty any day now but I expect the price will go up too. Everything costs money !

The yeti is more an SUV than the Octavia scout was? No, they are/were chunky estate type yokes with a little higher than average clearance. Both would have crunched quite badly on the route I took a Honda CRV on today. I had a Mazda estate that wasn't far off the yeti for clearance I'd say! The whole SUV thing is a vague description in fairness, but I would see the yeti as being closer to a car than a Sportage for example. The yeti boot only compares well to a hatchback car. Pitiful compared to proper estate or a suv, eg sportage again.

    Well, sure:

    Yeti: 405 litres.
    Sportage: 564.

But just as most people who buy an SUV don't need high ground clearance, 4 wheel drive or the increased risk of death from a single vehicle rollover, most of them don't need 564 litres of boot space either.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,613 ✭✭✭Big Nelly

Boot space is one of the requirement, was actually looking at a car first. Looked at Volvo at one stage but too small of boot. So the extra space in Sportage is great

I have mentioned I don't want a Yet. If people want to have a Yeti v not-Yeti conversation then start a thread. That was not the question/point of this thread:D

Mazda have pulled out all the stops with the CX5 making it as light, economical and good to drive as possible. I mean it's 150bhp and Band A tax/VRT in a SUV!! Best car of those mentioned IMO. Mazda make some great cars but don't seem to market them well enough!

    I don't think it's a marketing problem.
The Sportage is cheaper, better equipped and offers a superior warranty. This is why it will outsell the CX5.

I loved it, thought it was great, had a look at one. But you just cant get hold of them..

Anyway took the Tiguan and Sportage out today for test drive. I liked the Sportage ok, bit like a tractor, very noisey......was still ok drive. I didn't like the dual sun roof thing. It just adds unnecessary weight to the thing. Anyway I was happy in it but.....

We had taken the Tiguan out first, I liked it, smooth drive. Very quiet and the Misses loved it. The seats are nice and comfy....a lot better than the Sportage. Maybe should have taken her out in Sportage first.

Anyway can you guess which I went for??

What's with the CO2 rating issue. Is this yet another case of somebody spending 30k on a car and worrying about 50-100 on road tax?

If you didn't worry about a small tax increase, considering your capital outlay will be so high, then you might be able to consider a wider variety of cars.

Specific reason why I have to stay within 140 grams which I dont think I need to explain on here. Nothing to do with 100 quid

Must be the Kuga, so. :D

I know older mazdas had their Ford connections but the CX5 has nothing to do with the Kuga.

Having had one for the weekend, they are an unbelievable drive and a huge step up on the interior quality compared to any Kia/Hyundai.

A pity about the current availability but come January they are a big contender

As mentioned tested both, only had a look at Mazda and then told they couldnt get one in so that was the end of story there:mad:
    • VW was alot smoother on the road, was on bad enough road and was smooth
    • Sportage was ok but seemed a bit jumpy and rocky and was only on a main road testing it
    • Didn't like the seats in Sportage, was EX model so half leather/half material. They where not comfy
    • All material seats in VW, where ok, I didn't see much difference between them and Sportage but wife did....
    • Wasn't overly impressed with the sun roof and panoramic roof in Sportage, too much glass
    • Sportage was very loud compared to VW, drove both with radio off and it was louder, alot louder
    • Sportage did have more extra's than VW
    • Sportage was cheaper on a straight cash deal
    • Both had great leg room in back and boot
    • Didn't like the back seat on VW, the middle arm rest when down leave a gap between the seats and you can see into boot??? stupid idea to do that
    • Seemed to be more or less the same power/speed. Maybe VW a little bit nipper

To be honest there wasn't a whole pile between them, more extra's in Sportage but the VW was a lot better drive so as I am buying it to do long drives and a lot of milage so the VW won, really I needed in terms of extra's was bluetooth and cruise control with 6 speed gear box. :D

Hi forgot about this thread.....bit of a change of heart after I last posted...

Ended up leaving the VW Tiguan. Was due to some pricing reasons. I went back to look at the ix35 and garage had a Nissan Qashqai. The new 1.6 Ltr model. I had driven the 1.5ltr before and found it a bit slow and thought it was very expensive for some reason.

Was a bit of a deal going on that weekend so ended up buying the Qashqai 1.6ltr with 4-wheel drive. The SV model. Like the drive and the 1.6 is a lot nipper than the 1.5ltr. They had the 1.6ltr is standard 2 wheel drive(only a few of these in country) but where selling off the 4 wheel drive for same price so just took the 4 wheel drive model, not that I will ever need unless it snows.

Like the drive and it is pretty similar to the Tiguan. Paid and have 2 weeks and already 1,500KM on it:D

Bought a Hyundai ix35 this year and IMO it is one of the best cars I've driven. Comfortable, roomy, extras with nice driving position, good mpg, €225 tax/year. Don't really have any complaints about it to date. As previously mentioned both Kia and Hyundai are made by same so I would go for either of these models depending on price.

No point asking on a public forum and then getting all self righteous cause u don't like someones answer. They are trying to help you, maybe like a lot of folks obessed with low tax you are also mathematically incompetent.

You never said why it had to be under 140 so how are we supposed to know.

Sorry can't go into detail, what I thought I was originally getting wasn't exactly the same price as I thought it was...garage where not clear enough and I probably didnt seek enough clarification, caught before it was ordered so everything was grand.

Will seriously look at Tiguan when I swap the Qashqai....

Looked at the Kia Sportage a few weeks ago and the ix35 today. I think the Sportage is an amazing looking car outside but very average inside. The ix35 is nicer inside but average enough. The ix35 felt a little more solid and the engine was much quieter.

    Substandard inside
